I need help remembering a movie

It might even be an episode of a TV show. I don't remember the details... I think there were 2 young men or boys that made up an elaborate story about a sick friend or classmate and then were shocked when they returned and everyone was wearing tee-shirts and hanging ribbons or signs in support of said friend.

I remember that he faked being sick, I remember getting the girlfriend out of school, dressing like the dad, the car, etc. I don't remember everyone wearing tee shirts and overwhelming support for him to get better, but it could be.

They even had Save Ferris painted on the town water tower. Classmates were taking up a collection to get him a new kidney, someone said he was donating his eyes to Stevie Wonder, all sorts of crazy rumors- which really pissed off his sister and the principal.

It was triggered with all of the QAnon posts on FB and the hashtags - it made this scene or movie pop into my memory but I cannot nail it down. I think there were two teens that made up a story about a friend being ill to either get out of trouble or collect money and then it blew up all over town with ribbons and people wearing buttons...

Now it is in mine...and I got nothing.

If I come up with something, I'll let you know.
