but what constitutes an underground band?

Factoid: The Charlatans were the first band to perform on LSD, whacked out on Owsley Stanley's product, in Virginia City.

They were Beta testing the San Francisco sound in Virginia City, while Stanley was Beta testing his Acid Test thingy.
