1. I heard Michael Palin on NPR talking about fans coming up and rifling off "Monty Python" quotes.

He said they always do it as if they expect him to immediately reply with the response from the show. Then he said it was just a TV show. They did it, got it over with, and didn't really think about it again and none of them ever watch the old shows. His delivery was just as funny as one of their episodes. He said people will say things like "You guys TOTALLY changed my life" and his response is generally, "Well gee, I'm sorry."

2. Well, O.K., I get what a pain fans can be on that level. I've been told before I should be gracious

when somebody does the thank-you-for-your-service thing and just say thank you or you're welcome. (I'd rather not be engaged with that meme because it's usually wingnuts/chickenhawks who say it.) So when I've reported here saying something like, oh-it-was-nothing and it turns into an argument like, yes-it-was/no-it-wasn't, the "gracious" thing came up. So I guess it's easier said than done. Sometimes I *have* just dropped it with the you're-welcome thing.

So when an artist or whoever is approached by fans who are thrilled with the opportunity to tell them what an impact their product had on them personally, like they seem to think the artist has never heard it before, it's sort of the same thing.

I heard a Julian LENNON interview where he said that, quite apart from his personal grief that took some years to deal with, he was accosted by people talking to him about his father their memories/condolences, which complicated his own coping and prolonged it, and the people kept it up even when he *had* come to some kind of terms with it, such that he either thought about it or actually did make a video in which he talked about the whole thing and process, which he either played for people or thought about playing it every time they came up to him.

I get it I get it. I didn't like being told to be gracious, but now I sort of get that part, too.

I have nightmares about losing my fingers and not being able to play the guitar anymore.

And it's not even my job!

9. I'm amazed we even tracked him down. One of the guys knew where they were staying.

We hung out by the entrance to the hotel - only fans waiting there. Gabriel, Rutherford, and Banks pulled up in a green Ford Fairmont. I don't remember if Thomas was with them or not. I wasn't in the best of mental states right then.

3. Neal Peart from Rush put it nicely in their song "Limelight."

"I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend." I get it, and if I ever saw the man across the room, I might raise a glass, but then I'd go about my business and leave him to his. I'd never walk up to him and try to tell him how he changed my life. He has indicated that he values his privacy, and I respect that.

Back to Glenn Frey, that's 35 years of strangers coming up to him thinking like they're friends and wanting to talk about the same thing over and over. He said he's tired of that. I don't blame him. He doesn't say he hates you, though.

12. Rush actually handles this phenomenon very well.

In the excellent documentary about them, Geddy and Alex handle all of the meet-and-greet -- because they like doing it. They explain to fans that just because Neil doesn't like doing it doesn't indicate his disdain for people's enthusiasm; he's just a very private guy.

That seems to satisfy most Rush fans, who are generally (in my experience) a bunch of really nice people.

I don't really follow them anymore... haven't for years -- but I'm glad they are still around.

They made a lot of money. They could have stayed on some job and not become famous. This is just a small price to pay for the life they lead - and when they make the big $$, they can do what they want.
