People Are Horrified By This Popcorn And Mayo Salad Recipe

...

Well, people on the internet would challenge that notion as they are showing no mercy for a popcorn salad that went viral. Chef Molly Yeh shared a recipe which includes popcorn and mayonnaise and the internet is horrified. People are expressing their disgust and even calling the salad a crime against humanity.

...

While she is making the salad, Molly explains that “Popcorn salad is one of those classic Midwestern dishes that you would often find in a church basement potluck.” According to her, the typical ingredients are vegetables, popcorn, and mayonnaise; some people put fish in it. She admits that hearing what goes into the salad, it sounds weird, but is confident saying that the final dish tastes really good.

Molly’s recipe includes vegetables like peas, carrots, and shallots whipped up with mayonnaise, sour cream, cider vinegar, sugar, and Dijon mustard. It all gets mixed with a pile of popcorn and the plate is finished off by putting watercress and some celery leaves on top.

1. Classic Midwestern dish ??? I have never heard of this in my 67 years of living in the midwest.

That has to be some of the grossest slop I have ever heard of.

2. Well, that appears to footage from her show,

but I just searched the FN website, and that recipe is nowhere to be found.

This sort of thing makes me wonder about alternate universes sometimes. The universe I grew up in had no such thing common in the midwest.

8. I follow Molly Yeh on Instagram

and I watch her show here and there...I don't know if this actually a classic Midwestern dish, but there are references to it on the interwebs. I found several recipes that are all different and look equally peculiar. I equate this to marshmallow "salad", jello "salad" or pretzel "salad". Very odd.

16. No kidding. I've been to a LOT of church potlucks, as a pastor's kid

and a former church worker in both the Midwest and Texas, and I’ve never seen that before.

18. I will confess to doing that sometimes.

I've never seen it at a potluck, and I probably wouldn't do it in a salad I made for someone else to eat, but it's not bad. I got the idea from a recipe I tried for a rice salad that had peanuts in it. The peanuts absorb the dressing a bit, but stay crunchy. If I'm just throwing things in without a recipe and I don't have any celery on hand, peanuts it is.

10. My first reaction was: ew, soggy popcorn

Then I thought: mayo is oil based, not unlike butter... and I love popcorn drenched in butter. Hmmm... could there be something to this?
