At the suggestion of Catbyte, a few weeks ago, in this thread,

https://www.democraticunderground.com/10181482605 I got my cat Pixie's DNA tested, and just got the results:

I had always thought she was mostly Siamese and Persian but apparently she isn't. A little bit of Persian, the largest single percentage Maine Coon. Go figure.

2. Hmmm...

The link isn't working. I get a 404 Not Found.

But that's interesting, I wonder what she looks like.

3. what is a polycat?

Just a hole in the db they fill with a crazy name?

We had a white shepherd that was very much shepherd with probably some lab thrown in. the dna analysis said he was a shepherd and yorkie mix. Huh? He was 80 pounds and very much a shepherd.

There was no yorkie in him. Well, not in the last 10 generations anyway. We were told that sometimes the db isn't very populated with certain genomes and they just fill in with what they have. How bout a goat?

6. Mixed breed of unknown lineage.

Most defined cat breeds have existed only since the 19th century so most cats are mongrels. The only old breeds are what are called landraces, which evolved pretty much on their own, like the Norwegian Forest Cat, the Maine Coon and the Siamese.

5. Is she a long hair? The Maine Coon hair would support thinking she had a lot of Persian. I'm

Assuming she has some sort of color shading, a la Siamese. That Siamese trait doesn't have to be a close genetic contribution, as I've found out. Tons and tons of "Siamese mix" in our village, but you won't ever see a Siamese outside! I have two of them myself!

8. She's a semi-longhair with very fluffy fur that mats easily.

Had to get her a lion cut last summer, hope we don't have to do that again.

Here she is, much younger and less heavily furred than she is now, but with the markings and blue eyes that made me (and the vet) think she's part Siamese:

11. With her haircut, she looks like my Tesla (electric blue eyes)! I prefer the Siamese mixes to the

Purebred, which look like they've been squeezed out of an icing tube. I think the color shading looks pretty on a normal cat body!

10. After looking at her picture...

I would have guessed a little bit of Tortoiseshell.

16. Sweet!

When I was a kid, my sister brought a Maine Coon home, he was really big.

The last furbaby that I brought home was a tortie-point Siamese, she was gorgeous with her face split down the middle with orange and white on one side and chocolate/seal point on the other which included her ears. The rest looked Siamese with a tortie mottled affair. The vet said she had all the attitude of torties and Siamese, maybe that's where I got the idea that torties were something more than coloration. All the tortoiseshells I have ever known had an attitude and grew to very old ages.
