The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support Forumswoke up at 6 am to hearing a gushing noise, coming from the basement. Not a good sign.
Basement flooded. Approx. 4 inches of water.
My next door neighbor's house is like ours. Called them. they are on their way to nyc.
Called Servpro, nobody can come now, Maybe at around 7 pm.
Meanwhile I hear the noise my dryer makes when it has finished a load of clothes. Checked the outside vent for the dryer. No water dripping out.
Called my handy man. No answer. Left message.
Now the noise is off.
Woke up hubby. He calls the Regional Water Authority. I guess it is good to report a flood, which we did. At the very least, we can let them know They might modify our bill this month.
I'm on my second cup of coffee.
Wondering how this all ends..

(63,912 posts)I don't recall how we were directed to Liberty Mutual, but we must be one of its better customers. We keep the house up to all standards. It's a beautiful home, but needed modernizing over the 28 years we have owned it, e.g. rope and pulley windows, AC, new furnace, several bathroom issues. new roof, fencing, replacing electrical wiring and upgrading.

(13,924 posts)As you said...not a good sign.
Turns out it was the under sink water filter. Where the filter screwed into the water pipe was blown out. It looks like the City cleaned out the water lines and created an air lock. When the water came on with a rush it blew the filter (weakest part of the system)... Of course the City denys any wrong doing..
State farm took care of the whole thing... Oak floors ruined... PITA...
Good luck with the journey...

(63,912 posts)They should be replaced every 10 years or so. (Now you tell me).
Called our insurance company. They'll send out an adjuster when the job is done.

(2,336 posts)We had a basement flood. Neighbor came over and removed the toilet and we were able to push a lot of water out that way. We also used a water vac -- took a long time, then finally ServPro came to save the day.

(63,912 posts)The hot water heater is the culprit here. This is the third one since we've been here. And we've been here over 30 years. So it's right on time...

(23,736 posts)If it's a leaking water pipe in your house and you haven't already,.....turn off the main supply of water to your house.
I had a pipe leak a couple of years ago and the only way to stop it was to turn off the water supply where it enters the house. If you have a basement it's probably there.
Good luck, it no fun.

(63,912 posts)be replaced with a new one every 10 years. Ours was 19 years old!
Plumber will install the new hot water heater Monday. Until then we eat out or use disposable
plates and plastic forks. No warm showers.

(9,581 posts)some years ago. He tried to cut off the water, but it was still coming full force, so he took a sledge hammer to the water meter instead. Took us a minute, but we figured out he had busted the water meter belonging to our next door neighbor. oops.
Good luck to you. Don't grab for a sledgehammer, though.

(22,270 posts)the bottom had fallen out of the hot water heater. Fortunately, this house had a storm drain in the floor and the water just ran down the slope to the drain. I turned off the water at the intake pipe ( we had cutoff valves thank goodness) so at least I had water for the rest of the house although it was cold. My showers were no fun until it was fixed.
One of my friends had a flood in her house caused by the intake pipe to her washing machine coming apart.
