(25,936 posts)I would like to let my cat outside to explore, but its my fervent belief that cats lead longer, healthier lives indoors. Once they get a taste of outdoor life, it requires constant vigilance to prevent escape. My cat, having never been outside, doesnt attempt a jailbreak.

I lived in a garden-level apartment (half underground) after my late husband had to enter a nursing home. Something got into my normally staid, beautiful gray and white kitty, Nigel, and he had an attack of the zoomies. I had a small window open and he ran right through the screen only to find himself on the lawn. Horrified, I ran outside to try to capture him, but I didn't need to run. I rounded the corner and there he stood like a statue, crying, more horrified than I was. I scooped him up and carried him in. He was limp as a dishrag. He never went anywhere near that window again, even though I always kept all the windows closed after that. I miss him, too.
