That road to Key West.

Nothing like a medical issue to focus your concentration on life. I always wanted to take that drive from Miami to Key West. Anybody have any suggestions for places to stay, places to eat? Key Largo? Key West? Anywhere in between? I know about Capt. Tony's. Where do you buy a parrot head?

1. My daughter use

to drive that road daily, she lived in Big Pine Key, where the tiny deer live. So many island to chose from, have fun picking one.

Food is great. Peaceful place to spend a few days.

4. I used to commute to and from Miami FL quite a bit (I'm in STLMO), and as entertainment, I used to

drive up and down US 1 highway quite a bit, just pulling over and fishing...it was fun, and enjoyable, if anything, to just sit there along the coast at various spots and just relax, not really caring what you caught...enjoy the sights and weather, and I suspect that the places I used to go to eat aren't there anymore, being that it's been so long ago.

5. I wonder if the Fish House is still there in Key Largo.

Broiled red snapper, cold beer, key lime pie

Nothing better

6. tip...don't drive it on a weekend...

unless you like bumper to bumper traffic. Used to drive it a lot in the 80's. I'm sure it's more crowded now. Too many places to mention in KW, great bars, food, music....my fav is The Green Parrot.....good music and drinks, conversation. If you like wine, head to Grand Vin on Duval. Have fun!

9. Go to Robbie's in Islamorada

and feed the Tarpon. You can also eat at their restaurant. Eat at Blue Heaven in Key West and The Stoned Crab. And, if my memory serves me correct I think it was the Banana Cafe that had delicious key lime pie!

11. Marathon

Had a place called The Island. I lived on Ramrod Key, so Boondocks, on that island.
Big Pine Key area has No Name Key and No Name Key bar there.
As for Key West, go to Alonzos for dinner. Its in the marina area across from Sunset Pier..Blue Heaven in Bahama village. Its a wait there but fun spot.

As for bars i like Hogs Breath the best. But you cant go wrong.
Kims Kuban makes a wonderful con leche and egg sandwich for breakfast. They are located in convenience stores, so not downtown. I cannot take a trip there without a con leche from Kims!

13. we stayed in an old 1950s style mom & pop place on Grassy Key

just north of Marathon. From there we could roam up and down the Keys as we wished. We loved our old style motel.

We did a lot of snorkeling up and down the Keys: Bahia Honda, Sombrero Reef, Pennekamp State Park. The best part of our trip was the day trip we took to the Dry Tortugas National Park. You can get tickets at a number of places in Key West. We went out on a big turbo catamaran; our trip included breakfast food, lunch and snacks when we returned to the boat. We toured the old fort then snorkled on the very pristine reef. It is a full day but so worth it. This was one of those thing we knew nothing about before we got to the Keys and started seeing ticket booths for it all over the place. It was the best thing we did that whole week. So, if you have a day to spare give it a shot; I think you can fly out but the boat trip was a lot of fun.

Don't forget Hemingway House and the cats. `

Everybody's Key Lime Pie is the best. However Mangrove Mama's 19991 Overseas Hwy, Summerland Key, FL 33042 was the best we had on our trip. This is a fun little place kind of tucked back off the road.
Try Cuban food whenever you can. Cuban Sandwiches are SO good
