I wanted him to wait to apply for jobs until he was fully vaccinated...and he is now. We built a resume which was a challenge since he doesn't have much of a work history. We noted he was a 4.0 student and an academic letter award winner...he's played piano since he was 7 years old and he received an award of excellence from the Royal Conservatory of Music in 2019 and he played travel baseball for a decade...none of which applied to the job he was going for but these experiences and commitments help build the young man he is today.
Anyway, he was hired as a cashier at the local Ace Hardware and get this...the manager who hired him also hired me as a cashier at another small hardware store back in 1983. I worked there through college. He didn't know that Owen was my kiddo until after the interview. Can you even believe that? Small world indeed.
I'm in tears, I'm so thrilled. Thanks for reading.

(149,762 posts)Obviously the manager realized that you'd gotten your son well prepared for his job.
And when he realized he'd given you your first job--well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!

(23,366 posts)I doubt I'm going to dinner on his first paycheck...the kiddo is saving for a new amplifier for his electric guitar....you know...just a kid who wants to be a rock star.
Nice to see you, my friend. I haven't run into you lately around here.

(3,169 posts)What kind of kid are you raising? Shouldnt he be sitting at home collecting unemployment like all the other kids?
Seriously, congratulations to him! Sounds like a great job to have, and that will add to the resume!

(24,654 posts)He was compensated for work he did on a state representative campaign last year, but that was as a contractor, not a W2 employee. This is the first time he had to hit the pavement, fill out job applications, and interview. Home Depot and Target turned him down flat.
Yeah, that first resume is a tough one. He was so busy with travel soccer that he didn't have a part-time job in high school. And he's dragged his feet on getting a drivers license. He's getting his first hourly labor job at 20 years old. Working maintenance at a Bealls Outlet. They must have really needed someone because they hired him after one phone interview and waived their 90 day transfer eligibility policy so he can work at a store nearby when he goes back to college in August.
Momma Bear here is howling that he got a maintenance job that includes cleaning their bathrooms. They should have asked to see his bedroom and bathroom as part of the interview process.
