I was a member of AOCS, too. So any oil & fat chemistry catches my eye.

(33,582 posts)A lot of this has to do with spending the last years of my career with high end mass spec, HRMS, proteomics, and the like.
For a long time I was a protein/peptide/nucleoside and mimetics thereof kind of guy, but I've only recently become relatively intimate with glycomics and lipidomics and the signaling capabilities therein.
I've been asked to play around with the arachidonic system as biomarkers, in particular prostaglandins and the like most recently, and in the somewhat distant past, I did a lot of work bringing EPA esters forward. They are now commercially available, albeit by prescription only.
I did have some interaction with AOCS types some years back, when I was involved with a project to make canola oil "healthy" driven by people working to insert an EPA gene into canola, (gasp), GMO.
It would have been nice, but for now, I'm stuck eating black walnuts for my dietary EPA.
Very cool molecule, EPA. Besides black walnuts and of course, the algae that puts it in fish oil, the only other known biological source of the stuff is human breast milk as I understand it. No other mammal produces it in their breast milk, only humans; it is thought to play a role in brain development, an interesting but probably useless fact.
One of the companies for whom I worked needed to purchase some AOCS methods at one point. I recall they were not available in the libraries. It was one of those methods that was kind of esoteric as I recall, but I don't recall the details.
