(34,133 posts)My big boy, who we lost last week (I can hardly think of him but...) used to come in from his walks almost always with a box turtle in his mouth. I would be walking through the house an hour later and find one on the floor trying to get out.
No matter what we did he found them in the back yard. He never hurt them and you could never see them until he put them down. **I do understand what this does to turtles. I am not the one who did all the walking but when I was there I watched and still he would get one now and then even when I watched him constantly. He LOVED box turtles.

(759 posts)Our Roxy likes to chase things. Almost got run over a few weeks back. Was going through the sliding door to the patio, a rabbit was running full bore, Roxy in pursuit. Mr Bunny managed to escape under the fence.

(1,160 posts)Thankfully, they're all too big for him, and once he realizes they will win, he goes off in search of things more his size, like lizards. His up-close vision is very poor, so I don't think he's caught one yet. It's odd the things that bother him... slow-moving bees, police, impertinent squirrels (never caught one of those either, thank god).
You know who does eat the baby tortoises? The hawks. They have a nest in the middle of my backyard, and they have babies every year there. They eat those poor things and leave the shells behind. I know it's the birds and not Doggo because he only comes for snoopervised visits whereas the birds have free reign.
I lost a dog a few years ago too. It was rough. I'm thinking about you and your big boy.

(34,133 posts)He was big enough he could carry a medium sized turtle in his mouth and we would not see it. It freaked me out the first time I saw one crawling across my living room floor. He was never so happy as when he could walk with a turtle in him mouth. The kindest, sweetest boy ever!
Thanks, it never gets easier.
