My Son The Astronomer tells me that most, maybe all, physicists and astronomers are quite convinced FTL (faster than light) travel is simply not possible.

That could readily explain why we probably have never been visited by aliens. They just can't possibly get here (nor could we get to their home planet, wherever it might be) in a realistic time. Even generation ships (ones in which several or many generations would live and die) would have limitations.
