She sent my older brother upstairs to get me to stop.

PERFECTLY timed, the "bird" chose that moment to fly out of our room and swoop down the stairs...
scaring the SHIT out of my brother.

The house was chaos personified as my brother and my dad spent the next half-hour chasing that
bat with brooms until they chased it outside.

And Li'l MiddleFingerMom went to his well-deserved slumber... about as smug as a 4- or 5-year-old
child could be.

And I wasn't scared one bit. A bird had been annoying... a bat was COOL!!!

Full of bird soup!
Well I was 'full of bird soup' last year, but kind loungers held my hand until I, with the help of a broom, could chase a bat outside.
NO idea how it got into the apartment.

I had a king snake in my house last week lol. Bats and king snakes are both good critters.

But damn it gave me a start.

Don't kill it; I let my king snake leave on his/her own.

We've come so far from when we shared our homes with beneficial critters.

possible to go outdoors now that the bats have established colonies and eat a whole LOT of mosquitoes. Used to be we couldn't set foot outside the house without being swarmed. They even got into the house through the doggy door.

Although I guess I'd be startled at first if a bat got in the house, but I know they're not out to get me...

9. They do scare the hell out of you!

I had one in last night because a friend left the door open while he took off his shoes. I ran around with a net for half an hour until Mr. Bat started getting tired and swooped lower and lower .......... then, my cat who I thought was sleeping on the back of the couch jumped up, and WHAP!, knocked him right out of the air. Bat was ok and taken outside, Hobo went back to sleep, and I needed coffee.

10. There was an incident here within the past week in the Atlanta area

where an apartment building was invaded by bats. All the tenants have had to be moved out until the bats are cleared out. And it is against the law to kill them. Be thankful you are not living there.

Most plausible: they tried to roost on a stove pipe cap and fell down the stove pipe into a fireplace.
Plausible because: from time to time I'd hear stuff tumbling down the stove pipe
Further evidence: No bats in house since I covered the top of the stove pipe with chicken-wire mesh

Next guess: they roosted on a pneumatic screen-door closer and flew inside when the main door was open
Plausible because: Well, here's the story. I once heard a big thump in my kitchen. Couldn't guess what it was. Went to investigate. Found nothing. Decided it might have been outside. Opened the door. Discovered one big ass bat down on the door sill between the main door jamb and the screen door. Bat looked up at me, apologetically
clicked a bit, and flapped it's wings once or twice slowly. I threw open the screen door and slammed the main door. Then reopened the main door. Heard bat clicking clicking clicked up in nearby tree. I figured bat had roosted on pneumatic screen-door closer and fell off it in midday
