My daughter has been curious about what happened to the pet lamb my brother and I had as kids. I couldn't remember.
We went on a vacation and when we got home - no more lamb. I was about 3, my brother 5. The true story is that my father had some friends take it to a slaughterhouse.
At the time the story ALL the adults involved could come up with to tell us, the children, was....that it was attacked and killed by a pack of dogs. Thats what they told us. Thats what they came up with.
Great Thanksgiving dinner today. Thanks Mom.

(24,145 posts)My Mom had a pet cow when she was young, that she really loved. Same story--sent to slaughter.
Now here's a funny story--I had a pet Brahma steer when I lived in CA. Originally borrowed him from the neighbors to get the horses used to seeing them. They could have cared less, but I got so attached to him, I decided to keep him. He ended up being called Cowster. The tractor repair guy was there one day, and was just appalled--You can't name something you're going to eat!
