The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI believe I know what it is about the Kardashian family that bothers me so.
All of them. Mother, daughters, husbands, former boyfriends, etc.
They only put out press information about them spending money and having fun. You never see any of them working or doing charitable work.
I know some of them make money by just being famous. But that's not my point.
And trying to engage the public with individual sagas of trying to "live happily after".
The only one who seems to have tried to do something productive was Kim studying for the baby bar exam.
I had hoped to see less of them after their show was canceled. No such luck.

But, that is letting them off too easily. The harm they are doing (and have done) by sending the message of what makes a "successful" or "worthy" person to emulate-- to countless "fans," especially young girls-- is unforgivable.
Kim, at least SEEMS to be sincere about a more worthy "second act." We shall see. As much as that might be her direction, her past superficiality continues to come to the surface in nearly everything she does.

I can sincerely say I have little clue who these guys even are other being entertainment folks, does that make me bad, or clueless?

(102,304 posts)and exploit the way they do. May I remind you that a large portion of their fame & resultant $$$ comes from THEIR OWN CREATED social media (not to mention that "momager" Mom, Kris is the force behind all their reality shows and monetary spin-offs and has always molded their messaging/appearances)?

(102,304 posts)above (LITERALLY) ALL ELSE. THAT is the justification for ilk like the Kardashians and other exploitative celebrity culture.
Well, I've seen the impact you seem to be defending on adolescent and teen girls in the ER--the resultant anorexia, bulimia, and suicide in the goal of obtaining an unattainable (sans unlimited plastic surgery and $$$ ) ideal. So, NO. I don't defend them AT ALL.

Thankfully, I have never seen any of their shows and I'm not on social media. Still, though, you can't escape them.

(47,520 posts)Shallow, untalented people making money off of encouraging other people to be as superficial and self-absorbed as they are. The fact that they were so successful tells you more about the American people than it does about the Kardashians.

(47,520 posts)Reality TV requires no real talent and less money than quality programming. Who knew that so many people would love these shows? I suppose we should have seen the early signs when Jerry Springer was such a huge hit. People love other people's conflicts and problems. Our society has been devolving for years.

I vaguely knew about some show, but didn't know it was cancelled. Why was it cancelled?
Yes, I understand one of them did something related to a person unjustly imprisoned, but it's not publicized as much as they are in the flaunting of their Brazilian butt jobs all over the NY tabloids, which gratuitously publish this soft porn.

(10,024 posts)For young women, they present a picture of glamour and wealth that is unattainable for most but leaves them spending their lives trying to emulate people created by Hollywooda meaningless task. Much has been written about young men and how many today feel a lack of belonging and turn to the Internet for a sense of community that is often going down dark pathways. When I was a child, our family always sat down for dinner together. It was rare that one of us was not there. The television was not on, nor the radio. We talked with one another. Holidays were shared with the extended family. I wonder today how many kids grab meals on their own, eat at odd hours, and even if with the family with their ears plugged into their music of choice.
I know of parents who are so busy with their lives that they barely have time for their children. The children essentially grow up with external influenceslike the Kardashians or the Internetguiding their development and their beliefs.

(9,897 posts)I am glad to say that I have never watched any of their TV shows and probably couldn't identify all of them short of the Jenner girls and Kim, and the former wife of Caitlin (nee Bruce) Jenner.
I vaguely recall them glomming onto the Paris Hilton-what's her face Lionel Richie daughter fame train and then they seemed to be everywhere in trashy tabloids and pop culture rags ever since...

After all, Barbie has been an astronaut and a veterinarian and a businesswoman. Becoming a lawyer only requires a slightly different set of accessories.

(1,639 posts)At least ugly Christmas sweaters don't take themselves seriously-- or is it the wearers of ugly Christmas sweaters who don't take themselves seriously? Where the Kardashians are concerned, their clothes may have achieved a self-awareness that they, themselves, lack.
