I had it on mute until the last 30 seconds.

(44 posts)for me is watching final round re-runs on Youtube of US Open Golf Championships
2022 has to be a better year as hopefully the rat bastards from Trump Land such as Jordan, Gohmert, Greene, Boebert, Bannon and MANY OTHERS are looking at prison terms for their roles on the failed coup attempt via 1-6-2021

(34,195 posts)I'm now 75 years old
and the New Year's Eve shows of today do nothing for me.
I don't watch until about 5 minutes of midnight
to see the ball in New York City come down.
I especially skipped "A Rapping New Year's Eve".

(22,037 posts)We cut the cable long ago.
Reading is more interesting for us with an occasional movie.
What made the shows unwatchable?

(1,239 posts)Watching two guys get drunk and the quality of their attempt to entertain also dwindled.

Priceless. Glad we cancelled cable.
Happy new year, Airplane.

(38,958 posts)It was essentially drivel interrupted by commercials which I found much more enjoyable than whatever the excuse for programing was that they were offering up.

(23,542 posts)I looked forward to that.
I have never made it a habit of watching the NYE celebration shows. My parents never watched them, either.

(6,285 posts)All of them in any era. If they are live most are drunk by midnight. If they are recorded earlier they are awful.
I did watch Miley Cyrus, I think she lost the top of her costume at midnight. That was funny.

(2,150 posts)He's in a time zone three hours ahead of me. Called to wish me Happy New Year before calling it a night.
I started flipping through the channels
Three hours later, no pantslessness
Starting to wonder what cable channel he was watching for New Year's

(32,858 posts)I tried to watch but it was terrible. I just cant appreciate the music. We watched a movie until 11:55 paused it, tuned in to the ball drop and then finished watching the movie.
We had the whole are we too old to appreciate this conversation and decided it wasnt our cup of tea. Hence the movie.

(16,845 posts)I finally got around to watching Being the Ricardos last night. It was all right, although it wasn't quite what I thought it would be. I knew when it was midnight because of all of the noise outside. Sounded like a war zone out there. Some of the noises sounded like a large caliber gun going off. My neighbors must be prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse.

(4,606 posts)Their usual giant shindig at Madison Square Garden was postponed until April due to covid, so they rented out a small venue and played for us fans at home. They did a liitle bit about being masked, vaxxed, and pantsless.

(25,247 posts)All of them were really worthless to watch. Andy & Anderson seemed like they were just trying to kill the time with senseless drivel. Andy - was drinking quite heavily and appeared pretty drunk and boisterous (just like a drunk that can't handle their booze). Anderson was trying to make fun of Andy - but I think at times - he was embarrassed.
Ryan Seacrest was trying to do his Dick Clark impression. Badly. I never liked this guy and still don't. Didn't dwell on his broadcast at all.
I could only take so much 'country music' - which to me is more rock than country now. So I didn't watch much of that telecast.
I was looking forward to the Miley/Pete telecast. Liked Pete. Miley was tolerable. Didn't like most of the entertainers on that show. High point was her sister and her duet with Miley. They sang Jolene. After the countdown to the new year - I swear that Miley with her butt to the camera didn't have underwear on and was flashing.
So ultimately - I turned back to CNN at the stoke of midnight to watch the crowds in Time Square.
I was looking forward to the Chicago stations bringing in the New Year. Heard talk all this last week about the fireworks display - was supposed to be the biggest ever for Chicago. It was a dud in my opinion. I don't know if the weather played a role in that disaster. Anyway - the stations showed very little of the fireworks display. Hope Chicago didn't spend much of the taxpayers money for that fiasco.
I got more out of the cable news shows featuring how different cities around the world bring in the New Year. All of which were much, much better than anything I saw here in the old USA.
And the people that attend these events - seemed to be forcing that they are having fun. I've always had the suspicion that they pay the people that they show on camera - so it looks like they are having fun.
Probably - the best laugh we had last night was a short blip showed from - I think it was Whiting, Indiana and their Pierogi drop. Hysterical. They flipped to what they said were locals enjoying the evening. There were about four of them. Elderly. Sitting at a table - moving their bodies - not in sync with the music being played in the background. I think they were at a Knights of Columbus Hall in Whiting. This to me was the highlight of the evening. Again - hysterical!!!!
Bottom line - I was in bed about 10 minutes into the New Year here in Chicago. Fortunately - slept well. Happy New Year everybody. I think?

(10,872 posts)The local TV station had a "virtual reality" show of the local fireworks. There was so much BS on the screen I couldn't see the fireworks. It sucked.

(16,953 posts)I tried at the end of 2020 and it wasn't worth the effort. This year, I didn't even try. I stayed up till midnight, wished many people a happy new year and was in bed by 12:15.
What didn't you like about the shows? I think I was too young to appreciate Guy Lombardo and too old to appreciate anyone since.

(22,252 posts)probably with Dick Clark, or tuned in at 5 til to watch the ball drop.
This year we watched re-runs of "Merry Buds of May" a delightful BBC comedy series from years ago. One of the major characters is played by Catherine Zeta Jones. We have been working on that series for about a week. I crocheted throughout most of the programming.
I know we watched the last episode of Agatha Raisin (that is available on ACORN) sometime yesterday but not sure if it was during those awful shows or not.
Those types of "special occasion" shows where so much below par activity is crammed into as little time as possible are just pointless to me.
However I did find a free livestream of the Rose Parade and enjoyed it thoroughly. I never watch any other parades, but this one is all about what is going on in the parade. The hosts do not talk about anything except the seeds and flowers on the float and other details, a little history for the various equestrian groups, marching bands and any other pertinent trivia.
Compare that to the Macy's parade, which has degenerated into a marching advertisement for New York City. The hosts mostly talk about themselves
I used to watch the football games back when the halftime shows were broadcast. My mom and I would jump from game to game hunting halftime shows.

(4,915 posts)We live in the NYC metro area and took our kids to the parade the Thanksgiving after 9-11. They were 11 and 8 at the time. It was a lot of fun. The broadcasts hebre vexing increasingly just a product placement orgy.
