Interesting info about famous scene in Poitier's "In the Heat of the Night":

The Sting
@TSting18
I'm so sorry to hear Sidney Poitier has died, what a beautiful actor and a beautiful man he was. The slap from In the Heat of the Night (1967) was described as 'The slap that was heard around the world.' Poitier was the personification of dignity and grace. We lost a legend today

Text

“There were some flaws in the script that had to be corrected,” Poitier said. “I felt certain things were not appropriate in terms of the reality of the times. They acknowledged what I had to say and they made certain changes.” 2/2

"'In the Heat of the Night': Why Sidney Poitier Insisted His Character Return a White Man's Slap"

Snip

Poitier isn’t just any Philly cop; he’s a top detective in the homicide division. And the backwards cops of Sparta, Mississippi, needs his help solving the murder they arrested him for. Along the way, Tibbs ruffles the feathers of Eric Endicott (Larry Gates), the richest man in Sparta, who reacts by slapping Tibbs across the face.

So how does Tibbs — a Northerner visiting a place where Blacks were lynched — respond to that offense? In In the Heat of the Night, he smacks Endicott right back. It’s an electric screen moment, and one of the reasons Poitier considered the film “revolutionary.” Later, Poitier said he wouldn’t have made the film unless Tibbs smacked Endicott back.

I submit a scene equal to that is Tibbs in Gillespie's home late in the night.

Do not, by the way, look up and read the book. There's hardly a thing in the movie on its pages, and at the end of the book Officer Wood gets hitched to an heiress....

The original fucked around and found out.

Followed by a pic of that stupid Word paperclip "help" prompt, saying, "It looks like you're trying to tuck around. Would you like to find out?"
