Almost accused of being a porch pirate. AKA Thank the Lard for Nosy Neighbors...

A friend is out of town and I usually watch her house for packages or junk fliers. She texted me and said someone dropped off a gift on her front porch so I went over and grabbed it. Meanwhile, Amazon was delivering packages on our street. A grandparent was visiting the neighbor directly across from the house where I picked up the gift and assumed I was stealing. After a few text exchanges between various neighbors, it was confirmed that the theif was just me and I had permission to steal.

The neighbor called me and told me everything and said I was almost talked about on NextDoor. As we say in the south, Thank the Lard for Nosy Neighbors!

me--not even listening when I told him I was delivering a misdirected package. I told him and the neighbor that in the future I'd be notifying the delivery company to pick it up, rather than delivering it to the correct address a few houses away to their doorstep, and if they have a long delay or never receive it, that is the price of being abusive to those trying to be neighborly. I told the neighbor that if her boyfriend apologized or left permanently, I'd rethink, but honestly, I thought it was possible from his reaction that he was going to shoot me. She was defensive, but hardly sufficiently apologetic, so I feel no need to rethink my plan.

This would never have happened in previous decades--no matter where I lived. Damned sad...
