will be the first significant storm we've experienced. The Blue Ridge parkway is closed near us, and we took our dogs there to walk on the gloriously car-free expanse with breathtaking views. Talk about a balm for the soul, in such a fraught time.
Snow - growing up in Rhode Island, I still remember (somehow - I am about to turn 66) waking up, seeing the snow, and turning on the AM radio to hear if school was cancelled. Big mounds made by the plows, playing King of the Hill with friends, building snow forts.
I know lots of people who hate the stuff, and it is no fun to drive in (I drive in it well, having grown up in it, but it is the others I watch for that are NOT skilled in such things).
I have to say my wife and I are excited about this coming snow - watching the surprise of our dogs as the run and slide and chase and frolic in it, the crowd at the bird feeders......
Sunday should be beautiful to behold, and a lot of fun (do I still sound like a child, or what!)

(17,622 posts)..so i can watch the snow fall. I have a covered porch so I will sit out there with a glass of wine and smell the smells and hear not one sound!
Have fun today!

(57,073 posts)They do not deal with the snow effectively (to say the least!).
I used to live there & had to go to work regardless of the weather & road conditions.
They might plow 1 lane on highways & interstates, but they do not plow exits.
They also use sand on the roads... trust me, it can literally take years to get it out of everywhere under your hood.
Be safe, NHL! Enjoy the mountains! I miss them terribly.

thanks for your words! After 28 years in Raleigh, our two years here in Hendersonville are indescribably wonderful!

(10,014 posts)When I was a kid the schools never closed and we walked 3 miles with snow over our knees, uphill of course.

(1,850 posts)We'll get about 10 inches, last I heard. He's usually the most accurate for the hendo folks.
Because you haven't been here for a big snow, I will say the main roads are sprayed with deicer and plowed promptly, secondary are deiced but don't get plowed quickly, and tertiary are plowed by locals with an attachment on their trucks, if at all.
Looking forward to the snow too, I have lots of tasty treats, comfort foods, and a new book!
I'm not scheduled to work until Tuesday. Bosses are closing the store on Monday anyway.
We got slammed this week with folks buying snow and cold weather items. Had 34 sleds on January 4th, sold out as of yesterday 1/14. Still had lots of hats, gloves, socks, waterproof or snow boots, flashlights, snow pants, etc. I'm off today, but I can imagine it's busy downtown.
Lots of folks actually come to town (from Florida) when snow is predicted, to enjoy or experience it. And folks who've moved here came because we do get 4 seasons, and look forward to a good snowfall.
Enjoy!

(60,014 posts)We're ready. Ground some coffee in case we lose power (we have a gas range and gas logs, so that's good!). I was actually not far behind a deicer truck when out shopping around yesterday.
I have to say the "panic in the stores" here is nothing like Raleigh (even given the population difference). It is clear people here for the most part know how to cope with this white stuff!
Stay safe and warm. Just vacuumed the house (yuck!) - now thinking of what I will do with those nice shrimp for dinner tonight. Two dogs flanking me in their beds, little dog on my lap as I type this, wife is quilting and listening to a book.
Stay safe and warm!
