(83,750 posts)I was five, went up the driveway and got close to the road...our pupper, a Boxer took me by the wrist and brought me back down the drive. He knew and protected his own.

(102,236 posts)It is always so sad to me to see still youngish children terrified of (all) dogs.
Nice story.

(83,750 posts)The doggies train of thought:
Ya know? All you had to do was ask and I would have helped ya. Then I laid there watching you struggle and took it upon myself to assist you, stubborn man. See that, easy peasy when we work together.

(6,926 posts)We had a German Shepherd who guarded anyone out in the yard. He followed my husband when he was working outside. When I had surgery, my sister came to help, she went to pick blackberries, he followed her and guarded her.
He was the best.

(83,750 posts)Such a sweetie.
Most of our dogs and cats were strays. We lived in a rural area and people dumped them. We took them in.

(201 posts)I have thought that so many times. Dogs give us SO much and expect so little in return.
I had the world's best girl, my cocker spaniel Candace, for 13 wonderful years. She's been gone almost 9 years now, and not a day goes by that I don't think of her and miss her. I was there at the beginning and end of her life; she was there for me all the years in between.
[Sidenote: When I was a kid, I would hear the song Mr. Bojangles and always felt so sad and didn't understand the part of the song about his dog dying and still grieving after 20 years. I get it now.]
Now I'm a cat daddy to two (sometimes) adorable adopted feral cats. Love them to bits, not sure it's returned, lol. I really want to get another dog, but my problem is I want one like Candace. I don't think I'll find anything even close.

(6,926 posts)She became my constant companion during my cancer treatment. The next spring she was diagnosed with untreatable cancer.
Our last two dogs had cancer. DogGirl became our "last dog". My husband declared he just could not do this again. In our more than 40 years together we always had cats and dogs. When we met I had two cats Dolly and Loretta. He had Bruno the wonderful dog and Peanuts the cat. There were many others. Only one or two died or just disappeared. We had to take all the rest of them and have them euthanized. It is just too hard.
It has been 9 years since we lost her and it is still too hard.
But I will soon celebrate 10 years past my diagnosis...so will focus on that.
