I don't see dust devils much here in the city, due to lawns and pavement. But they can be seen in the fall, when leaves swirl. As a kid, I had a cat who used to dive into them.
In winter, the same phenomenon develops with powdery snow.

When I was a young pup my brothers and I saw this huge dust devil coming down the street. It was about 60 feet high, and we decided to go run into the dust devil, just as we started our run the dust devil hit a neighbors tree and took it down, and the dust devil was no more.
