all the way back to George Washington as their neighbor, before he was President. They moved on, not believing in slavery and some ended up here in Kansas and I am directly from that line. They worked with John Brown while he was here, my GGG Grandfather and his son, my GG Grandfather were both written up in JB's letters as courageous men. They participated in Black Jack and the sacking of Lawrence and my GGG Grandfather became the first justice of the peace in the free state of Kansas. I even live close to where they were back then. There are or were several DUer's whose relatives worked with mine. We never found out if they actually knew each other but they worked on the same areas for the same goals. Underground Railroad was one big one.

My mothers side is shady as to how, where and why but they have been here from Switzerland, much later than my fathers people, post Civil War.

It seems both sides came here for reasons not just for new land and excitement so it is pretty shady, even more so than their past is here.

On Edit...Of course they were not all good. Several of them became famous "Indian fighters" in the area of Ohio and I think it said Illinois? I tend to be very proud of the good relatives but the current crop is pretty different.

Much longer on moms side. That’s without doing any research. Just the records we have.
My brother is into that kind of thing. Me, not so much.

Me? To my grandparents... I know some in the family have gotten into this but I never really did.

That's the year my first American ancestor arrived as an indentured servant in Virginia. The indenture of servitude is the reason there is a record of his arrival.

There are some vague, unsubstantiated reports of ancestors predating 1640 in Wales, France, and Ireland. But nothing concrete.

My grandparents were from Belgium, but grandfather's family is from Holland. I know his parents were born in the 1850's. Grandmother's family was from France. Her parents were born in the 1850's too.

Great-great-grandparents were born in Germany and Ireland, came here to the US, mostly before the Civil War. Sadly we have no contact with distant relatives in the "old country."
