"Rainbow Sleeves" (written by Tom Waits and performed by Rickie Lee Jones)

Long ago, these two were an item. After they split up, I heard Tom Waits say
in an interview that she haad been drinking him to death.
.
Tom Waits!!!
.
That revelation and this song (on her "Girl at her Volcano" EP -- my favorite of
hers) caused me to fall in love with this woman... and I fall in love again every
time I hear it.
.
I always wished that I could sing this to a sick or sad child as a lullaby (I'd
change the word "whiskey" to "whimsy&quot -- but I've never had the chance.

Rainbow Sleeves
.
You used to dream yourself away each night
To places that you'd never been
On wings made of wishes
That you whispered to yourself
Back when every night the moon and you
Would sweep away to places
That you knew
You'd would never get the blues

Well now, whiskey gives you wings
To carry each one of your dreams
And the moon does not belong to you
But I believe
That your heart keeps young dreams
Well, I've been told
To keep from ever growing old
And a heart that has been broken
Will be stronger when it mends
.
Don't let the blues stop your singing
Darling, you've only got a broken wing
Hey, you just hang on to my rainbow
Hang on to my rainbow
Hang on to my rainbow sleeves

You clearly know what I mean. Some people you listen to the song and like or even love the song, but I swear when Rickie Lee sings I'm in the room with her. She's the singer at my bar, my cheeky girlfriend, the cool, trashy girl at school I wished would pay attention to me.

Saw her inconcert once a long, long time ago. She was absolutely brilliant, and boozy, and scared me about as much as Amy Winehouse scared me before she went right on off the cliff. I expect Tom was right, and whooee wouldn't you have loved to have been a fly on that wall just once?
