Camping at Lake George State Park. The camp sight was on an island in the middle of the lake. I’d never seen mountains before and it was cold at night…in July!!! As a Florida girl it was something else.

A couple weeks ago I came across some photos from Aug. 1996, when we stopped at Lake George for a couple days on our way home from a music festival up by the Canadian border. It had been an intense 3 days and we needed come back down to Planet Earth before returning home, lol.

Our “vacation from our vacation” was great! It was just what we needed. The weather was absolutely gorgeous– super bright blue sky, enormous fluffy clouds, and hot sun, but with the perfect breeze so you never got too hot. Heaven!

We parasailed, rented jet skis and just relaxed. Our motel was crappy but it felt like a first rate paradise after doing a weeklong run of shows followed by days of camping among 70,000 stinking hippies at the festival.

Just hung pic this on my fridge last week.

every couple of years. They even stayed at the same family owned place. It was being run by the grandchildren of the original owners the last time they stayed there.
Great pic!

Tetanus made my arm really sore and Covid slowed me down for a day.

I don't remember all of them, but I'd have to say that Hepatitis was probably the least worst one.

My Venice trip was so wonderful. My husband surprised me at Christmas and we went for my big 60 birthday. It was so wonderful despite the fact I got picket pocketed in Milan changing Trains to go to Zurich. I was out 50 euros and cancelled my credit card when I got to Zurich. My husband and I each carried a different credit card.

Staying at youth hostels and traveling via Eurrail. Jeans, sneakers, t-shirts.

Scotland, England, France, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Switzerland.

And the best part: The only time in my life that I will ever remember a real block of time (90+ days), each day being special.

Going to Europe by myself for two weeks next year. I’ve never been and am hitting all the art galleries my brain can possibly handle. Can’t wait! I’ve never even been out of the continental US and am in the process of getting my passport now.

First is a trip to the old Soviet Union in January, 1976. It was an Interline Tour, meaning for airline employees at a remarkably cheap rate. I was an airline ticket agent at Washington National Airport 1969-1979. Interline tours were amazing. On this one we flew from JFK to Helsinki, spent the day there sightseeing, then took the overnight train to Leningrad. Two or three days there, then flew to Moscow. More sightseeing. Flew back to Leningrad, train back to Helsinki, flew back to JFK. All meals, rooms, transportation, and sightseeing included. $125.00. It was cheaper than staying home.

The second was a trip about ten years ago to Sedona, AZ. Stayed at a Hilton, did sightseeing including a Pink Jeep tour and a helicopter tour. Then I drove to Williams, AZ, where I spent the night and the next day took the train to the Grand Canyon. Overnight at the Canyon. Up early the next morning, took the bus to the farthest eastern stop at the Canyon, and was completely alone for an hour. Wonderful. Train back. I booked the Luxury Parlor car and was very happy I did. The best part was that on the way back to Williams the train was held up by some "desperados" who pretended to be robbing us. They were a delight.

The honorable mention is my honeymoon in Eastern Europe in 1980. I know, strange choice for a honeymoon. We started in Vienna, then took the train to Budapest. After a few days there, we took the train to Cracow, Poland, very near where my husband's family was from. They are Jewish, which is important to this story. I insisted we go to Auschwitz, because, well, because. Husband was initially very resistant, but in the end was glad we went. We also went to a nearby small town, Borzęcin, where some of the family was from, and husband recognized landmarks described by an elderly relative.

I have had the good fortune to have travelled a lot. Some of it was in the ten years I was an airline employee and could travel for free, others because I like to travel and do as much as I can. March 1-18 2020 I was on a cruise to Hawaii, and it was wonderful. Holland America, which has smaller ships than most and did a remarkable job of cleaning the entire time. As the cruise progressed, the cleaning was ramped up. We all felt very safe on that cruise. I hope to take another cruise sometime reasonably soon.

While I understand financial restraints, I find it hard to understand never going anywhere. Yes, between Covid 19 and my own financial constraints, I'm travelling less that I used to or than I'd like, but I still occasionally go somewhere. I go to science fiction cons, most notably Mile Hi in Denver; Bubonicon in Albuquerque and yes, the name means what you think it means; SoonerCon in Norman, OK; COSine in Colorado Springs; and the Jack Williamson Lectureship in Portales, NM. They are all wonderful. What I like best is meeting authors whose books I've read, and who are invariably interesting and wonderful. The cons were all cancelled in 2020 and 2021 and I'm so glad they are back now.

Albuquerque, Taos, Santa Fe. Horseback trail riding through the Santa Fe National Forest at altitude. Talking to Native street vendors, and buying beautiful silver and turquoise jewelry. Going to art stores, and historic sites to view petroglyphs. Eating wonderful food. Spending time with other very friendly horse people. Back when my ex was still a member of the human species.

We almost moved there.

Runner up is a tie: Yellowstone and other nearby sites, Cozumel and The Keys.

I enjoyed the one cruise we took but I like staying longer than one day in a location. However we did have a day trip to an underground river which was amazing.

21. Diablo II Friends and Family Beta

Back in '96 when Blizzard was still a small company, I began doing volunteer tech support on their message boards. They had a two post per hour limit (to help prevent spammers) that as easy to get around... At first, there were a number of complaints I was not banned but then a post by PatN pretty much silenced that by saying that since I was helping and not spamming, they would let me continue. I became a bit famous in the Blizzard community and by the time Starcraft was released in '98, I had to make use of the 'Do Not Disturb' (/dnd) feature of Battlenet. I think it was in the fall of '98 when I first got contacted by a Blizzard employee while playing a game. I was invited to a private channel where I gave them my address and I started getting swag in the mail... T-shirts, posters, hats... Nothing really good but some cool stuff. In early fall '99 I got an invite to play in the Diablo II Friends and Family beta. I think it was the first time I scheduled a vacation with the specific intention of doing nothing but gaming... And I did Nothing but tequila and Diablo II for a week... It was pretty awesome.

As a side note... I would have a big falling out with Blizzard some years later and be banned. I kept getting asked if I would support their big new game World of Warcraft (for which I also turned down a job to work on but that is another big story). I kept giving people a simple 'No' but it raised a lot of questions that I eventually felt I had to answer... So I did. I made a rather large post where I explained that I did not agree with the business model of paying for a game and then having to pay a monthly fee to play the game. I kind of when into some great detail about how greedy it was and well... Lets say it was not pretty. My post was deleted some hours later, I was banned and never returned to their boards.

But... The Diablo II vacation is a very fond memory
