My cat is an indoor cat and does the same thing if we close a door in the house, particularly the bedroom.

When she wants to be alone, she goes into the bedroom, closes the door, and hops onto the bed.

the side of the door he wanted to be on. He’d be all slow coming to the door but when I started counting he’d get a move on.

I think they sometimes are just making sure you WOULD let them in, before they decline to come in.
