Many were steam driven, the wheels without rubber, just iron cleats bolted on. (I have such a wheel).
Entertaining video to see WWI soldiers walking around again.

was invented in stocton ca. guy was using a steamer . kept breaking down. had a crew of 200 people . after gasoline , 100 and 0 breakdowns . lombard . think lombard st , san fransico ca. had one of the first crawllers . fun stuff. btw , love your screeen nick.

Both of my grandfathers served in WWI, my paternal grandfather on horseback, brought ammunition to the front. I never did meet either of them, though, they both died long before I was born.
