I have found two kinds of different answers online to measure a waist.
Start at the hip and cut cross the bellybutton, or measure the narrowest part of your body. So, what do you do when the thinnest part of your waist and your belly button are not aligned?
And to add to the confusion, I am on a vigorous exercise program, and everything is getting narrower on top, but I'm not losing it, it is shifting downward. I look like a one pack, followed by a generous muffin top.

Elastic waistbands are a great invention!

(46,764 posts)big girl sizes this year. I hope I can toss them out by the end of summer, and start the new year one or two sizes lower.
They said this was going to be hard, and they weren't kidding.

On average, she's lost one pound each week for about 15 weeks so far. It's slow and steady, which is ideal.
Good luck to you.

(5,272 posts)Women's sizes are inexact where some of my older size 16s are still too tight while some 12's and 14's fit perfectly.
But for some size 16's that I like for exercise and working outside that are only a bit loose at waist I added a button further over to make them snugger. But then some other 16's are now way too big for the button method and I hope to donate if I can maintain lower weight.

(32,729 posts)If you have a pair that fits, lay them out and measure with a tape measure the width at the waist . When shopping, I do mine at yard sales, pull out your tape measure and match them up.

If you have a clothing alteration store near you, I'm sure that they can demonstrate how to properly measure a waist since they do this type of thing on the daily.
When I'm shopping and I don't feel like trying pants or shorts on at a store, I will put the waistband of the pants around my neck, if the waistband goes completely around my neck, I'll purchase them. I found this tidbit on the Today Show and so far hasn't failed me yet. I can't post the video right now of what I'm trying to explain, so I'll try to post that later.
Hope this helps you.
Edit: 2 added videos
Actual tip starts at 3:25 in this video.

(11,652 posts)No offense but it gave me a good chuckle imagining someone in the store trying on pants around their neck.

(46,764 posts)Wonder if this will work for me, though. I was a rail when I was a kid. I don't think my neck has kept up with my other extremities. LOL!

(7,683 posts)This past winter, I purchased sleep pants for myself, and tried this method and it worked. I also recently purchased summer shorts with this method and again it worked.
Of course I kept my store receipts just in case it didn't work out. LOL!
might be helpful. I hate trying things on in stores, being a germaphobic and all.

I wanted to get my sugar down and as I did that, I lost weight. My sugar is down to normal, and I've been closet diving to find clothes that aren't baggy or loose. I don't know what size I am right now. Some of the clothes I'm wearing are so old, the labels are unreadable. And I think the newer clothing sizes are different from 20 or 30 years ago. My daughter got me size 16 slacks at Christmas and they fit. I hadn't worn 16s since before I had kids! But I have some 18s that fit ok, a little loose. And the sizes vary among the brands, too. I really liked Basic Edition at K Mart, because if the label said Large, the shirt would fit. I like several of the brands at Penney's, because the clothes fit.
I noticed some clothes 14 was large and 16 was XL (really???) I don't remember the brand.
Good luck with your weight loss and exercise. Let us know how you do on the clothes hunt
