grocery store this week was buying the Unsalted Salted Kerry Gold. They were out of the salted kind so we bought the Unsalted kind as that was all that was available. We cant really taste the difference .just wondering if anyone else can tell the difference.

If you want salt, it's easy to add yourself when putting it to use.

(5,940 posts)Been happy so far, except I bought some Trader Joes unsalted and it mouldered before I finished it all - never had butter get moldy before. bleghh.

(11,068 posts)Can't by any bread product in any sort of bulk, because it goes moldy in about 3 days... Which sucks because I love their scones, crumpets and naan.

(2,813 posts)But their butter has less salt than most American brands.

(14,998 posts)which was a lot less than I expected when I first looked into how to substitute one for the other in recipes.

(45,525 posts)Refrigeration preserved foods without the use of salt, but people missed the extra salt in their food so it was added to many products. Use unsalted, especially for baking and add salt how you like it to other foods. My 2 cents.

(10,043 posts)hubby prefers salted so we usually get that unless I need unsalted for baking. We just buy the store brand of either.
Jirel
(2,025 posts)If I have the option, I buy unsalted, as its better on fresh homemade bread, and its better for baking because the salt in the butter has to be figured into the overall salt in the recipe. I love unsalted butter for certain things.

(2,824 posts)Get it unsalted. You can always salt your toast, but you can't remove too much salt from your cake batter. My butter never lasts long enough to get moldy. It's too yummy.

(15,812 posts)Unsalted (non-Kerrygold) for general cooking etc. Salted Kerrygold for toast.
I don't go through a lot of Kerrygold.

(26,757 posts)I can definitely tell the difference (not in dishes, but as a spread), but you can always add salt.
In theory, salted butter lasts longer (freshest for about five months rather than three), but few people buy so much that either will go bad
and you can always freeze it.

(11,068 posts)I remember going to Mexico when I was a kid and they only had unsalted butter at every restaurant we went to. I couldn't stand it.
That's probably the main reason I don't like it for eating - I remember it from that vacation 40 years ago.
I use it to cook all the time and always have some in the fridge.
Which led to my wife opening the wrong kind the other day and I immediately told her, "You used the wrong butter!"
That earned me some strange looks.

(7,336 posts)If you like to leave butter out at room temp for any period of time, salted will stay fresher longer.
I prefer salted on toast, but I will eat any butter anytime.
And yet, *every time* I am at the butter section, I stand there wondering which to get. I still do not have a quick default.

(55,019 posts)unsalted is gross. and there isn't enough salt in butter to make any difference in most baking so I don't pay attention to those extra steps of math either. now, there is a difference in amounts by brand. I think challenge butter is much saltier than safeway's store brand, but I only buy what is on sale either way.
