Not sure this is the right place to post this. My husband and I are thinking about traveling to Maine and finding a quiet place--near the water, with hiking trails but not too far from seafood restaurants and shopping. We are looking for reasonably priced accommodations if anyone has suggestions, it would be most appreciated.
Thanks!!

(6,277 posts)Touristy but pretty.
There's also Brunswick, home to Bowdoin College, which had a nice art museum the last time I was there.
And of course Freeport, home to LL Bean.

(11,315 posts)Right on the water. My wife and I stayed with them and had a great time. And the weather should be awesome in October.
But you're out away from the intown action.

(86,889 posts)In Harpswell right when they changed over from the one room schoolhouse to the new six class building in the late 1960s.
We lived up on the main road near the center of town, I used to walk or ride my bike down to the wharf every chance I got.

(14,202 posts)Portland is nice. Right on the ocean. Nice views. Nice public access at the waterfront. Nice restaurants. Nice hotels. Nice shooting district in the Old Port Area. A very historic area. The boyhood home of Henry W. Longfellow is in downtown Portland. Of course back then it was not as built up as it is today.
As another poster stated Freeport, Maine the home of LL Beans is about a 1/2 hours drive north. Again good restaurants and a nice shopping district in downtown Freeport, Maine. Bring your walking shoes to explore the shopping district it is quite large.
The lakes region is about 30 miles west of Portland, a nice day trip on Route 25. The fall foliage should be breath taking in mid to late October.
The Poland Spring Inn is 35 miles north of the Portland area. They have fancy quest accommodations. A lot of recreational stuff to do in that woodsy rural area. Lots of hiking trails. Great food. That is the original water spring where Poland Springs bottled water comes from. You can take a tour of the old bottling plant.
Boothbay Harbor a ways further north on the coast is delightful. Then a short trip a ways north to Mnt. Desert Island to Acadia National Park is quite a trip. Lots of hiking trails and old carriage paths to explore. Right by the rocky coastline. Delightful photo opportunities in the scenic areas.
Great lobster and seafood all over Maine.
Contact the Maine State Visitors Bureau on the Web and take a peek for travel ideas. Once here ask around to the locals for last minute plans and travel ideas. Most people are very helpful, patient, and kind.
Hope you enjoy your trip to Maine.

(253 posts)I greatly appreciate your comments and ideas here. We live in the Southwest and it has been a while since we are back east. My husband loves seafood and I know it will be very fresh there.
Thanks again for all your thoughtful suggestions!

(13,938 posts)friend lives there so I have a place to crash. It's a great "little" city with "only 650,000 people. He is in the West End and it is a great historical place with lovely archatecture.
There is always something to see and do around P'land and it's surrounding area.
Being a city it has it's city problems. YMMV. Smaller towns are a lot less stressful.
Leaf peeping season is great and P'land is a great jump off place to look up and down the coast. Bar Harbor and Cadillac Mountain/Arcadia national park are a must see if you want to hike.. Always take the scenic route as you will never know what adventure you might find...Enjoy!!
