wasnt functioning. After testing it and doing some research I realized that the circuit board was fried. I contacted a couple of installation companies for quotes, telling them exactly what I wanted which was a replacement circuit board. First guy tells me I have to replace the whole system at a cost of $1,200. Tell him I only need a circuit board, and the installation hes recommending is only worth around $400.00. He cant warranty just a circuit board, but will discount the installation by $200.00. Thanks but no thanks!
Second guy comes our and confirms my diagnosis. Orders the circuit board and installs it the next morning. Parts and labor warrantied for one year. Cost $200.00.

(21,323 posts)They brag up going to Mr. Goodwrench because some unscrupulous people may want to sell you a car battery or an alternator for a dead battery, but wait, Mr. Goodwrench to the rescue. A mechanic pushes his finger on the top of the alternator belt and without inspecting the bottom of the belt determines that the belt is worn and sells the customer a new belt instead of a battery or alternator.
Maybe the customer just had a loose belt and all that Mr. Goodwrench needed to do was tighten the belt?

(9,983 posts)If the belt is smoked, it will be loose enough to tell with a touch. Also, the top edges of the belt.may be worn sharp.
No parts changers or shelf testers in our shop! I can Ohm Out (electrically test) a Delco 10si at night, under a streetlight, drunk.

(25,853 posts)Why would a garage door opener need anything more than a new battery? What's the story with a circuit board? Clearly my knowledge of garage door openers dates to the last century.
jmowreader
(50,557 posts)...that the "garage door opener" was the part inside the garage that pulls the door open. There is most definitely a circuit board in one of those.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,853 posts)I have replaced a garage door opener more than once, and there was definitely no circuit board involved. Just the garage door opener.
I'm completely flummoxed by this.

(50,557 posts)Your typical GDO has all these functions:
a radio receiver
a decryption circuit to read the encoded message your remote is sending
safety circuits to monitor the electric eye and anti-blocking circuits, which work to reverse the door's travel if it detects something under it
control circuits for the motor and light
and...
power supplies for the control board, motor and light.
A circuit board is the only way to mount all the components needed to make this device work.

(25,853 posts)what is actually happening with my garage door units all these years.
And honestly, the several times I've had to have a garage door unit dealt with, there was nothing at all about a control board, or anything remotely like that. Hmmm. ClearlyI am missing a lot.

(6,254 posts)will estimate for you what a repair job should cost if you know the problem especially with cars. I had a $150 AC charge and it was a $5 fuse. Stupidly I didnt even research the problem.

(8,914 posts)This happened to me.
I opened the unit and found the diode that was shorted because it got hosed down. It was really obvious.
I unsolder the diode, went down to radio shack (still open at that time), bought the new diode for $2.50
Re-soldered the new one back on the circuit board and it worked the first time
Took me less than 2 hours to complete.

(2,949 posts)Just bought these tires a few months back. Got a gash in sidewall of one tire. Knowing full well it was beyond repair I went back to shop and asked to buy a replacement. Sales guy asked me if my car was 4 wheel drive I told him yes. He said well we have to replace all 4 tires then as having one tire with full tread and three with worn tread will mess up your transfer case for 4 wheel drive. Went to another tire store down the block and got new tire.
