Tom himself says even though he's been in nearly 100 films, only four of them are "pretty good." That's silly. Maybe he means that dozens and dozens of others are VERY good??
Anyway, what are your top four favorite Tom Hanks movies?
Mine:
Road to Perdition
Saving Private Ryan
Forrest Gump
Captain Phillips

(15,381 posts)For the few seconds of nudity. I noticed with glee that in the opening scene when Hanks' bus driver character picks up the kids from the Catholic School, and then lets them run wild after they're out of sight, one kid brings out a Playboy that I recognized as one of my dad's.
Fond memories.

On the lighter side:

The Money Pit
The Burbs
A League of Their Own
On the dramatic side:
The Green Mile

(82,849 posts)Hanks stars opposite Jackie Gleason (!) as a hard-charging advertising whiz in his first "serious" role. Hanks is shaken when he gets news that his parents (Gleason and Eva Marie-Saint) have separated and getting a divorce.
If you haven't seen it, I recommend it. The final scene with Hanks and Gleason foreshadows the career Hanks is about to launch.

(43,350 posts)being made 10 to 20 years or so before I was born. My parents and grandparents (especially on my father's side, they were into experiential electronica, garage rock (like the Sonics, The Primitives, etc) and proto punk (the Stooges for instance) since the mid to late 60s) are all very musical, as are my older siblings. I sucked it all up like a sponge, then went out and did deep dives into what I found to be exhilarating.

(32,973 posts)So if 4 are "pretty good", there seems to be missing titles.
As much as I liked the popcorn flick-ness, the Professor Robert Langdon trilogy movies, The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, Inferno are not his best acting, IMO

(34,383 posts)Can you tell I like the "lighter" Tom Hanks? He's one helluva dramatic actor, but he's hilarious too and comedy takes skill.
Honorable Mention:
Apollo 13, which wasn't funny, but he was top-notch.

(17,304 posts)That's okay, UTUSN. We all have an actor (or two or three) whom we just cannot bear to watch. For me, it's George Clooney. I find he always comes off as smug.
What is it about Tom Hanks that gets under your skin?

(17,304 posts)even if you're not fond of Tom Hanks the actor, you gotta appreciate Tom Hanks the political influencer...

(70,691 posts)And I don't absolutely *DETEST* Hanks. Not like I do CAGE or Bill MURRAY or Bill COSBY.
As for who I like, I answered a bit in another thread because this one had gotten old, but since it popped up again: These days, I like the raunchy generation ones - Nikki GLASER, Tom SEGURA, the Comedy Central Roast types (except Jeff ROSS, gosh I detest more than I like), LAMPANELLI, wonderful RIP Gilbert GOTTFRIED, KIMMEL (great political heart), the incomparable COLBERT, LETTERMAN, George LOPEZ, Leslie JONES, Chris ROCK, Craig FERGUSON, Graham NORTON!, Conan, Robert SMIGEL, Sascha Baron COHEN, Tim CURRY .
The "mediocre" ones (no big like or dislike: ) - Norm MacDONALD, Amy SCHUMER, Sarah SILVERMAN, Tina FEY, Will FERREL, Arsenio, Billy CRYSTAL, Michael CHE, Seth MEYERS,
*BIG* dislike: Drew CAREY, Andy SAMBERG (&several SNL ones), Dennis MILLER, Chevy CHASE, CAROLLA, Eddie MURPHY, John & Jim BELUSHI, Adam SANDLER, Jerry LEWIS, Jimmy FALLON, James CORDEN, John OLIVER, LENO, Jackie MASON.
Lots of whatever pigeonhole ones have great politics, but GOOD WORKS (politics, charity raising, whatever) don't SAVE anybody. Same goes for our Democratic CONSTITUENT GROUPS - just being politically Democratic doesn't save/excuse bad behavior/criminality.
***All time great: Jack BENNY. ---------Comedic actor: Zazu PITTS, 3 Stooges, Groucho, the ZANY types.

(32,639 posts)I'm not sure why he thinks that movie is one of his best.
I've loved Tom Hanks in most things, but one of my favorites was the recent "News of the World" about Texas after the Civil War was over and all the turmoil of coming into the Union.
I thought he was wonderful in "Bridge of Spies" with the marvelous Mark Rylance. Also "Sully" with Aaron Eckhardt.
