Speaking of eels... they are among the fish in the ray-finned bony fish group (Actinopterygii) that in their upper jaw have a movable bone, the premaxilla, that along with specialized muscle modifications, lets the fish move that part of its jaw forward to grab prey. The specialized jaw is called the pharyngeal jaw, and it's actually pretty creepy. These fish are called teleost fish, the name coming from Teleostei, the sub-group of Actinopterygii that can do this. There are more than 20,000 species of living teleost fish, and only something like 5% of fish are NOT teleosts.
I learned this in a paleo class in the 1980s and never forgot it.
