Righteous Brothers - "Unchained Melody" - REACTION & ANALYSIS by Vocal Coach / Opera Singer

Righteous Brothers "Unchained Melody" REACTION & ANALYSIS by Vocal Coach / Opera Singer

The Charismatic Voice

2021 May 17

I've never watched Ghost. I know, I know, but I haven't. This puts me at a severe disadvantage when someone says, "you should do the song from Ghost!" because I'm clueless.

When I saw how often this song is covered though (I think I may have heard Elvis sing it?), I am surprised I've never heard this version before. So, here we go!

Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to the Righteous Brothers for the very first time, performing "Unchained Melody” Live from 1965.

I definitely recommend watching the original video without interruptions, here's the link:

and the way I remember it is from a high school dance I went to (not the boy-brings-girl kind; I never got invited to those), and there was this boy I had a humongous and totally unrequited crush on, and they were playing this and I was just dying for him to ask me to dance, and of course he didn't. So every time I hear it I flash on that unrequited crush, although at this point I probably couldn't pick the guy out of a lineup.

I found her analysis fascinating, too, as a long-time voice student.

I'm a musical ignoramus, but I really enjoyed the song and her analysis, as well. Along with the analysis, the parts I understood, I liked seeing her expressions of glee and sheer joy while listening. It's like I got to enjoy the song twice - once by myself, and again, vicariously, through her.

I'm more than a bit jealous of you folks that can sing.

a half ago, IIRC. I've watched it a few times, since I get such a kick out of her reaction to his singing.

And I wanted to post that video of the live performance since I get an error message with the link in your OP...and I see you just edited the OP to use the video I posted, and I'm glad you did.

This broken one was actually working when I first posted, but then I decide that it would look better if I added a little whitespace between the text and the YouTube window. I edited the post, adding a blank line and inadvertently deleting a letter from the link, breaking it. I didn't notice it was broken until seeing your post. Thank you.
