(115,733 posts)The notion of not having or at least wanting a pet is something I don't understand. There are few things in life as happy-making as an animal friend and I can't imagine living without one.

(65,076 posts)...but I only let my dog do his business in OUR yard.
So, I still have to clean up poop before I cut grass each week.
And, we still change the litter box.
So, that's just one of the things pet owners have to do. Not fun, of course, but has to be done.
Me.

Recognise animals as beings, with a right to protection, enhanced welfare and respect for life.
S.Korea granted legal status to animals to tackle abuse
Cetacea
(7,367 posts)Originally a group of scientists wanted to grant this status to dolphins and whales. The idea was picking up steam and then the GOP stole it and gave person-hood to corporations.....
As far as I know, India and possibly Costa Rica have given Cetaceans this status. I doubt Japan will ever do it as some in Japan are still slaughtering dolphins and whales. Ironically, they discard the largest and most complex brains on the planet...
There's a more recent push to include elephants, primates, crows and parrots.
I would love to see all animals given person-hood status, but cetaceans first and foremost.

(165 posts)any animals due to taking care of a disabled spouse but I have a couple of grand-fur babies and three chickens. We lost two fur babies and a chicken this year and it was very difficult for our children. I take care of them when they go on vacation. I greet friendly dogs when I'm out walking so you don't have to actually have an animal in your home to care about them.

(1,654 posts)He never had a pet in his life. If he could not love something that was another species, he could be a public servant. Pets teach us so much about caring without conditions (except for food and treats, of course). The pet also understands when you need them, when you are miserable and your pup or kitty puts their head on your knee and looks at you.

I enjoy seeing and complementing good doggos on the street. Had a beautiful Shibo Inu put their paws up on my leg as I said hello. Former neighborhood had a goregeous teenage Husky, and two Samis.
Best encounter was while at the laundromat of that neighborhood. I was standing near the open door of the laundry mat. A mild weather day. A person w their uncut ?Westie type (white, short loosely curled fur) walked by.
The dog looked at me, I looked back. it came running over, flipped on it's back for a belly rub! Which I happily supplied. 😄🥰 Then went back to it's human.
I love cats, but haven't had any encounters in a looong time. After watching soooo many cat, and kitten vids during Covid - I'm thinking of maaaaybe going to a Cat Cafe in the summer. I wish there actually was a mostly kitten cafe. Ohhh, squeee! 😄👍
