I hate liver. Never liked it, flavor and texture were gross.Looked like the bottom of a shoe. How about you. We have been posting about our favorites. Now, lets turn the tables,Edit--snotty eggs. tapioca pudding, and al dente spaghetti noodles-tastes uncooked to me.Tapioca pudding had these eyes looking at you, And one that seems popular--calamari. Tried it once, fried, and it was like eating a rubber band.

(21,161 posts)My Mother used to put bell peppers in everything. I became a picky eater and when i complained and refused to eat she finally used to cook with less bell peppers.
Once I went to dinner at someones house and they had stuffed bell peppers. I couldnt eat it and lied and told them i was allergic to bell peppers to not insult them.
And whenever I buy prepared food I check the labels to make sure no bell peppers. Luckily my husband also dislikes bell peppers.

(33,643 posts)I know how make 'em good. Key is to drive out the swamp gas they have in them, and get a decent char (with real charcoal, not gas). And season them right. I rarely eat Brussels cept the ones I make, cause yeah, they can be nasty

(14,906 posts)I learned to like brussel sprouts roasted. 👍
Before I had learned to like them more....

(33,643 posts)1) cut off excess stump, cut them in half length-wise
2) put in a ziploc with a little butter, about 1 tblspoon water, capful of lemon juice, and salt/pepper
3) nuke for about 1 minute (yes I know it's unhealthy to nuke in a ziploc but it's quick at least)
4) let sit/marinate for about an hour
5) place the halfs face down on a charcoal grill, I have a grate with small squares to put them on first then carry to bbq.
6) grill over direct heat for about 2 mins, then move to indirect for about another 5-10 depending how hot the fire is.
7) remove and toss with a little more butter & salt/pepper
They end up tasty little grilled cabbages with none of that swamp gas character.

(21,487 posts)Super tasters cannot tolerate bitter flavors. Other tastes can be a bit much for us, too, like sour flavors, too much salt, and fatty foods.
I discovered that I am a super taster in a biology lab in college. After explaining it to the class, the professor went around the room putting a tasteless sterile control slip of paper on our tongues. (It had a taste, though, to me. Tasted antiseptic.) Then he went around to each of us with strips of paper treated with a substance to test our reactions. To the average person, it would have a mildly bitter flavor. To super tasters, it would be very strong and intense.
That strip barely reached my tongue when I gagged and ran into the hall to a drinking fountain. The water did not relieve the taste. I asked for gum but nobody had any so I went to vending machines to get some.
I have always hated the taste of liver, coffee, Brussels sprouts, and several other foods. I also can't stand sour candy or tart applies and blue or green grapes. The only grapes I'll eat are red ones, which are naturally sweet. Can't tolerate tart cherries, only sweet black cherries.
Here's Wikipedia on super tasters.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supertaster
Ocelot II
(115,733 posts)I like regular coffee, but not espresso, and tart fruit is OK. But I really don't like the cruciform vegetables with the exception of broccoli if well cooked, and most things in the onion family. My brothers don't like onions either, so it probably is genetic.
wnylib
(21,487 posts)I sometimes eat an onion sandwich, which is raw onion slices on bread with ketchup. When they are cooked, onions taste sweet to me. Most kids like to add sugar to cold cereal or hot oatmeal if it is not sugar coated. As a kid, Cheerios and oatmeal tasted sweet enough to me that I did not want sugar with them.
People thought I was a "picky eater" as a child. Now I know that there is a biological reason.
Ocelot II
(115,733 posts)There might be variations of super tasters. The very thought of an onion sandwich horrifies me.
wnylib
(21,487 posts)Trust me, if you area super taster, you could not tolerate coffee no matter how it is doctored up. I remember when, in junior high, some of my friends started drinking coffee to act more "grown up." While at a friend's house, she persuaded me to have a fresh cup with her that she had just made. (Her mother was not home.)
I made a face when I tasted it and she said that I just needed to add more sugar and milk. I nearly put the entire sugar bowl into my coffee cup and still could not stand it.
I can't stand beer for the same reason. Too damned bitter, which is almost a disgrace in my mother's German immigrant family.
The intensity has mellowed a little over the years so that I have acquired a taste for small amounts of some foods that I never touched when younger.
Ocelot II
(115,733 posts)I also dislike beer.
wnylib
(21,487 posts)Also, did you read the list of foods at the Wikipedia link that I posted? How do you feel about the foods listed there?
Ocelot II
(115,733 posts)coffee (if a light roast), chocolate, mushrooms, licorice, and some mildly spicy foods. I don't like the rest of them, in varying degrees.
wnylib
(21,487 posts)variations, even among super tasters. It just seems unusual to me that you can drink coffee since I react so strongly to it.
I disagree with the Wikipedia article about super tasters eating more salt than most people. I do not like too much salt. I scrape salt off of pretzels before I eat them. I have read other articles about super tasters that say that we do not like much salt, which I agree with. But I do like the mix of sweet and salty flavors.
So there are variations, apparently.
wnylib
(21,487 posts)do not taste sweetness as easily as I do.
A super taster has a specific gene that is named in the Wikipedia article, plus additional bitter taste buds. All flavors are more intense than average for super tasters. But some people without the super taster gene can have more of the bitter (or other) taste buds than average.

(21,487 posts)It gave me validation of what I already knew, that I was not making up my taste preferences just "to be stubborn."
Interestingly, being a super taster is more common among indigenous people than in the general population, although there are super tasters in other ethnic groups. I have some Native American ancestry through my father's family, but my mother's family were immigrants from northern Europe, so I look White, with only a few barely noticeable Native appearance traits. But I guess I got the super taster gene from my father's family.

way down like in a soup or stew. Makes a good base with a slight peppery flavor.

(22,264 posts)I also use it in a Cajun stir fry. Cut it very thin and stir fry just until crispy.
I take it out of the pan and cook all the other stuff (squash, red pepper, cajun spices, tomatoes, and whatever meat I am using) then add the okra back in. Season with Worcestershire sauce instead of soy sauce. Serve over hot rice.
If you put it in soup, you have gumbo. The thinner you slice it, the less icky the texture.
When I was growing up, the only way anyone cooked it was boiled with tomatoes. It was so nasty and I would not eat it at all.

(22,264 posts)It has a totally different texture. It has 'bite' and a much more solid feel. If you know someone who eats it, get them to make some for you so you can try it out.
If you like it, buy it in the bulk bin at Sprouts, Winco or any other store that sells bulk items. I fill a bag with enough to fill the canister I use and I am good to go. It is much less expensive than the "Irish Oatmeal" from the shelf
I like all versions of oatmeal but I eat this version the most.
Additional unrelated information: If you have a store with bulk bins near you, that is where you want to buy your spices!!! I save a ton of money; I just buy exactly what I need, in smaller amounts than those tin can things or glass jars. Do not be afraid of the price per pound either! You are only going to buy an ounce or so unless it is something you use a lot. LOL Sometimes I have to toss a coin or a credit card on the scale to get enough weight to give it a price! It is very gratifying to buy bay leaves and have to really work hard to get the price up to 5 cents.
Here we have bulk spices at Sprouts, Winco, Central Market and some HEB stores. I think also Whole Paycheck but I am not certain.

(43,408 posts)Spam musubi is a snack and lunch food composed of a slice of grilled Spam sandwiched either in between or on top of a block of rice, wrapped together with nori in the tradition of Japanese onigiri.
Inexpensive and portable, Spam musubi are commonly found near cash registers in convenience stores or mom-and-pop shops all over Hawaii, Guam and Hawaiian Barbecue restaurants in the mainland United States. Musubi can be easily made with the right materials, and typically only uses spam, rice, some salt, nori and shoyu (soy sauce). In Hawaii, musubi made from homemade spam is served on catering trays at formal events by celebrity chefs such as Alan Wong at his exclusive restaurants.
Why We Eat: Spam Musubi
Sheldon Simeon from Tin Roof in Maui breaks down the history of Spam Musubi. This handheld snack of seasoned spam, sushi rice, and nori is a staple in Hawaii, where it was introduced during WWII. Sheldon prepares his own Spam Musubi while recounting the historical and social shifts that led to its popularity.

An estimate of the percentage of adults that can digest lactose in the indigenous population of the Old World
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactose_intolerance
It's also difficult to come up with a nutritious diet for children who are something more than "picky eaters." A lot of autistic kids, for example, are very sensitive to food textures and refuse to eat things with textures they find repulsive.
My wife is lactose intolerant, which probably reflects her Native American heritage. Our children quit drinking cow's milk in grade school, favoring soy milk instead, and we didn't give them any trouble for it.
These days there's a huge selection of non-dairy milk products in our local grocery stores. That wasn't the case thirty years ago, especially when we were living in the Midwest.

(922 posts)I once got Udi bread just to try it (I used to get Ezekiel Bread before), and it was just a weird taste, almost like a weird cardboard taste mixed with sourdough. When I was in Europe I went and got a pizza that had blue cheese, and it was just awful tasting. Yet I do like four cheese pizzas. Any cold stuff, my teeth chatter, whether ice cream, really cold water, and the like. For a while I had Trident fish burgers. At first it was fine, but after a while, it just didn't agree with me. I still like seafood, and I do get Gortan's Fish Sandwiches every now and then, but the Trident ones had something in there that I just didn't like, and my stomach would feel weird. I didn't get sick (throwing up or diarrhea), but it was a weird feeling there. But funny enough, I haven't seen it in Publix, Target, or Walmart since then. However, sometimes it depends, because even with the foods that I do like, I could have the same thing one time and it tastes fine, other times, it's not. I guess if you do it enough times, it loses its taste. I do not like carbonated drinks, including sparkling water. Super spicy foods, I am not a fan of. I can deal with some spicy stuff, but not overly spicy, and anything that is overly greasy/too much oil I am not a fan of.

Never tried the pizza with pineapples. The very thought of it is enough to gag me. I agree with moderation .I don't refrigerate my ice tea and I prefer water over soda. Some people might find it odd, but it is me that is drinking/eating it. Sometimes I think food products do change. One time, something is good, so the the next sale, you stock up on it with no one eating it.That pisses me off. I am more careful now on what I buy and how much I buy for the freezer. PS . tornado, I think we all go through these trials and errors about foods. It's how you know what you really like and what to avoid.
