Starting around 9 pm tonight, heavy snow for about 30 minutes, with winds of 45 mph. Then sub zero weather to minus 20 until Sunday morning.
I know those temps are common enough in some western states, and they do happen here sometimes, but not often.
Buffalo schools have already announced that they will be closed tomorrow due to sub zero temps, winds, and snow accumulation.
Local media are warning people that frostbite can occur within 30 minutes.
EDIT TO ADD: I just saw the thread in Breaking News about the Arctic Chill in New England and New York for this weekend. Looks like Maine will get the worst of it at wind chills of 60 below zero. Compared to that, we'll be having a warm spell.

I know. No Buffalo jokes. Sorry.

(21,487 posts)this has been a very mild winter in the western NY region. Temps have usually been in the 30s and 40s with lower than average snowfall overall, not counting the blizzard.
Private schools are also announcing closings now. Code Blue homeless shelters are gearing up for a busy weekend.

(9,656 posts)I dont know what our wind chill is supposed to be
We are used to cold winters, its the huge temperature swings that are so different from the past

(21,487 posts)Very used to snow here. But, our "cold temperatures" are usually around 15 to 20 degrees daytime, teens overnight. Below 10 in the daytime does happen here, but not very often. This time it's the wind and snow with the low temps that are the problem.
We've been having temperature swings too, especially this winter.

(21,487 posts)a convenience store. Streets and sidewalks were bare. Temperature was 34 F.
Looking out my window now at 10 pm, the snow is coming down in thick sheets. Everything is covered by 2 inches so far and it has been snowing for less than an hour. The traffic light at the corner (just outside my living room window) is swinging back and forth in the wind. Visibility is about half a city block. The temperature has dropped to 25 F with a wind chill to 11 F.
