(86,586 posts)But I like the chips without the ripples. And now I usually just go without the soup mix and just have them with sour cream... kind of like baked potato with SC.
But I like the vinegar chips, don't know why. They taste so bad they're good.

(5,306 posts)a medium size bag of name brand chips was almost five bucks.
Fuck that. I only get store brand chips now, and only once in a while.
I can afford the higher price, but as a matter of principle, just won't pay it.

(5,269 posts)Don't buy chips often as they are a guilty pleasure with no nutritional value whatsoever but Lay's switcheroo reducing the size to only 7 oz while retaining high price made me try a store brand of wavies that we like just as well.

(25,242 posts)Way back when I was still working and traveling I found myself in a mall near the airport for the city of New Orleans. We're talking 25 to 30 years ago - if not longer.
There was a shop/booth there that actually made flavored potato chips - like you see popcorn stores that sell flavored popcorn.
Walking around that mall shopping and eating these potato chips was one of my favorite things to do whenever I found myself in New Orleans for business.
That's where I first tried 'chocolate dipped' potato chips. I was probably one of their best customers. The mall was near the airport and before I would take my flight back home I'd stop there to buy a couple of bags of these chocolate dipped chips to take back home.
It got to a point that I actually investigated opening such a potato chip shop/booth in the Chicago area. I contacted the company that ran this New Orleans shop - but soon after I made my inquiries - the place in New Orleans closed.
Mall potato chips never caught on. As I sit here and type this - I still think it would have been a good business. You actually saw them go through the whole process of making them. Cutting the potatoes; deep frying them and ultimately flavoring or chocolate dipping them as they waited on you. It was a cool assembly line.
Kind of like the Annie's pretzels and the chocolate chip booths you see at malls now.
Nowadays - malls aren't as popular as they once were. It would have been a neat franchise to get involved with back then.
Ah!!! Memories!!!

(12,319 posts)If you get one right after its been dipped (and the chocolate is still warm), well, it's just heavenly!

(4,231 posts)that are widely available that I've had, after eating chips all across the country, are "Better Made" out of Detroit. They used to only be available in stores in Michigan etc. but now they ship nation-wide to the lower 48. Reasonable shipping rate too. They do have flavors but the plain ones are out of this world.
If you prefer a plain chip that has that "old fashioned hint of lard" then I would recommend "Mrs. Fishers" out of Rockford, Illinois. They will ship to you and they are in stores regionally in Illinois and Wisconsin. Bags are way bigger than the national brands. You can get them in buckets also. Don't be put off by my comment about the hint of lard. It's really a good thing and is well balanced by the salt. Besides how can you go wrong with a potato chip that comes in a bag with a great logo of a dancing potato with a top hat?

(22,252 posts)back. I love home made potato chips and if I can make it work without the fat it should be great.
We have a burger shop here in town that makes potato chips in the store. So Good. (also one of our very best Democratic Eateries )

(22,252 posts)There are about 20 recipes on Pinterest, with a range of variations in temperature and time.
I had to cook in batches and some were soggy and some were overcooked.
With regular roasted potato chunks, the air fryer is great!!
I asked my daughter if she had made chips; she had not tried it but she has made french fries - which she says are awesome.
I will try again, but will need to do some more research.

(148 posts)Buford Hwy Farmer's Market here in ATL has an excellent fresh sushi counter and you pass the Lay's International kiosk on the way. I also like the seaweed flavor, but the crab is a bit much (I grew up eatiing crab and they only get a part of the taste, which is disturbing).

(948 posts)Apparently, the grocery stores and their buying entities had a dispute with LAYS over LAYS raising their prices during the pandemic.
LAYS ended up removing their chips from most grocery stores.
It was a weird sight for a while - entire rows/aisles of chips were empty...
Except for the "NO-NAME" brand...that was literally the only chip available for about a 2-3 week span.
Well, bad business move on LAYS part... everyone who never ever tried the no-name brand before, suddenly found themselves buying them.
All I can say is I wish this 'dispute' would have happened sooner.
The 'no-name' chips are simply the BEST chip I have ever tasted.
EVERY bag is fresh.
You NEVER get those bags that have little seasoning on them - Every bag has has same consistency, spice wise. This was a major pet peeve of mine - spend $3.00 for a bag of LAYS BBQ chips, and they are damn near plain chips because they need to squeeze those few hundred extra bags out when the spicer is running low...
And - best part? They are $1.00 per bag at my local grocery store compared to $3.99 for the LAYS.
If you have a chance to try them, I highly recommend them.

But sit me down somewhere on a couch in front of a TV with a big bag of Lay's Flamin' Hot Potato Chips and "I can't eat just one." Well, actually I can eat just one whole bag.

As for Flamin'Hot, I never saw chips but damn those Flamin' Hot Cheetos are so awesome!

(148 posts)The absolute best, ever. Not that Sweet Heat or mesquite crapola, etc
I used to have a deal with my godparents in TX that we'd take GF chips and theyd bring Blue Bell ice cream when they visited. After UTZ bought Golden Flake, it seems like they're deprecating the original BBQ in favor of sour cream and salsa mesquite sweet heat pork rinds or some such. They're still very popular, though - whenever I try to buy some at the store (for say, movie night), the shelves are packed EXCEPT for the GF Barbecue slot. I've asked 2-3 local stores but they of course have nothing to say. I buy them by the case online from GF when they're available.
