A Birthday Request

It's rather amazing that 75 years have passed since I first landed on the planet. And what a trip it's been! With the approach of that anniversary, I decided to take advantage of Facebook's charitable donations platform and set a request for donations to our local food bank; it hadn't been posted for five minutes before the first donation came across. Friends are like that.

Anyway, instead of sharing that link here I decided to make a separate ask. DUers are known to give a damn, often expressing that caring through their generosity. So I'm asking DUers to please consider making a St. Patrick's Day donation to their local food banks. There's a lot of hunger in the country right now, and we can make some of that go away.

Thank you. Erin Go Bragh, y'all!

And they always have a basket available for donations to the local food pantry, though it's not restricted to food, I noticed someone had donated a package containing an assortment of socks. I often bring something to donate, this week it was a toothbrush and a large tube of toothpaste. When I get something for myself, I often get two - a second item to donate. Happy Birthday and thanks for the kind thought!

Are you getting heavy snow? I saw a headline saying a foot or more upstate.

Stay warm & safe.

We got a ton of wet heavy snow that lasted all night and all day. The nearby city declared a state of emergency, all the schools in this part of the state are closed and I got a message from my doctor's offices saying that they were closed for the day to keep employees and patients safe. And we're in the "moderate" snow area, it was worse down in the Albany area and just to the west. The local newspaper said there are power outages, the heavy snow brought trees down. Fortunately we still have power here, but the cleanup is going to take awhile. *sigh*

Glad you have power. I hope everyone's power is back up soon!

Glad they had the sense to close business & schools.

Stay safe!

And the other house on the circle at the end of the street has two beautiful trees in the front yard and there were large branches down, blocking the road - we weren't sure if the plow could get through. And these neighbors are currently down South so they have no idea. I'm hoping it will warm up and melt soon, but with the amount we got, it's going to take awhile - as was said on the local news...

I hate it when trees get damaged. I know it's just Mother Nature combing her hair, but still...

Can someone contact them? Or will the town remove the branches & bill them?

I hope it's resolved soon.

And the plow came through so it must have made it, not that it's noticeable now. And I agree, these trees are really perfect, a pair of twins which are particularly beautiful in the fall. But that happens a lot here. The neighbor where I grew up had a giant pine which he lit up with Christmas lights every year - but that got hit and when he came to visit (the family moved to Tennessee!) it was particularly heartbreaking. And what bothers me is when new people (like next door on the other side) clear their property of trees! If you don't like trees, go live in the city - not here in the woods! We regularly have wildlife visitors, including deer since this had been their territory.

my wife and I donate 5,000+ to Food Bank of the Rockies, and they do great work: 97% goes to food and 3% to administration. We also donate to meals on wheels and several of the shelters.

And we don't care, that countless numbers of our friends make considerably more than we do, and donate NOTHING. We do what we can, and that makes us feel really really good at Christmas...........

Make a cash donation, so that they can use it to buy groceries at wholesale. Stores have a bin to throw some grocery item in for the food bank. The grocery store just sold the item to you, and profited off the sale. Money goes much farther to helping those in need.

We know there are people that abuse the food banks......But we realize that almost all the people who go to the food bank need to go there to feed their children.......

With any cuts the Republicans might do or have already done to food stamps, it will get far far worse.

Please give what you can..............

I've just donated to my local food bank.

I used to do volunteer work at a homeless shelter. The shutdowns during Covid made that go away, and I miss it. I also used to pick up food at the food bank for the shelter.

I have been relatively poor at various times in my life. Sometimes a free meal made a positive difference in my budget.

So again, thank you for reminding me I need to give to others.
