(29,199 posts)you are in as much danger of falling 40 stories no matter what part of the pool you are swimming in.
Walking out over the edge reminds me of "Last Crusade"
The Path of God - "Only in the leap from the lion's head will he prove his worth." In the last of the challenges, the person must take a "leap of faith" from a sculpture of a lion's head across a huge canyon, when in reality there is a hidden path that is painted to look like the depth of the canyon.
only here it is faith in Science and Engineering!

(4,935 posts)One of them is the fear of falling. This is why so many of us have a fear of heights....its not the height, its the fear of falling.
I don' t know why people build things like this....begging for trouble I guess.

(442 posts)I have no fear of heights. My fear of falling is irrational, however.
I can go to the top of the Sears Tower and look out without any problem.
But...if I stand at the edge of a platform 1 or 2 feet off the ground, I panic.
No fear in airplanes because (get this brain trick) I'm SURROUNDED by solid walls, floors, etc. My brain doesn't bother to acknowledge the lack of ground below the plane.
BUT...I can't go on a Ferris Wheel because I am 100% certain I will just slip right out of the seat and plummet to my death...
If you put fake walls, floors and ceilings around me my brain will tell me I'm safe. Even if I'm in a cardboard box teetering on the edge of a cliff.

(46,327 posts)2 years ago I flew to Georgia and Sacramento, wasn't nervous at all.
Put me on a 2nd floor balcony and I'm terrified.
