I'm curious.....
What do DU'ers consider the very best brand and flavor of ice cream?
I've been home sick for almost a week (pretty sure it's something called Norovirus). It's a horrible stomach virus and entails all that you think it would entail with the bonus of cramping and extreme fatigue. I'm in the South Bay section of Los Angeles and apparently it's really spiking here.
Anyway, I'm curious about people's thoughts regarding their ice cream preferences. It's one of my favorite things to eat....
hippywife
(22,767 posts)I really just want plain vanilla. When I had oral surgery this week, they said to eat cold, soft food for a day or two. Husband took me to Wendy's afterward to get a vanilla Frosty, but they only had chocolate and strawberry right now. I ended up with the strawberry.
Upthevibe
(8,088 posts)I agree that plain vanilla is often times the best when feel ill. Also sherbet....
Eliot Rosewater
(31,131 posts)I cant eat it anymore because its too much sugar, so I get the Dreyers or Edys same thing no sugar added vanilla and other flavors.
Magnum dark chocolate on dark chocolate bars. Also good.

(8,088 posts)I LOVE Ben & Jerry's - Almost every flavor.

(131,240 posts)My ice cream favorites and preferences have changed during the past few years. Right now: Hagen Dazs coffee, which I now buy 5 or 6 at a time of the LITTLE ones, so I can open and finish one (or 2) per evening.
HAD Ben + J's coffee coffee buzz buzz buzz as favorite for a couple of years, and just heard that Entenmann's adding ice cream sandwiches to their offerings, so may try them if I see them.
Upthevibe
(8,088 posts)I also LOVE Hagen Dazs ........It's one of my favorites-in almost all varieties...

(8,088 posts)I guess this is going around all over.
I've never even heard of Norovirus. I finally feel like a human today.
Laffy Kat
(16,390 posts)I had to call out from work today. Throwing-up, but it doesn't feel like noro. I'm not achy. I rarely ever call-in and I'm supposed to work all weekend. My boss, who is wonderful, texted me to take it easy and that he had someone lined up for the entire weekend if needed. I have so much sick time saved up, I decided to take him up on it. Whew.

Ohhhh no.......I'm so sorry you're now sick. I hope it only lasts a short time.
I feel back to my old self today. It's been an entire week. I'm 65 y.o. and I've NEVER been

(14,975 posts)Oh boy, Yum!
Also Talenti's Double Dark Chocolate Sorbet or Gelato.
It's dark chocolate with these super dark chocolate - not even "chips" - tiny little not quite flakes; but So Intense their teenyness still packs a wallop. 🥰 They also use those in their black raspberry gelato.
JudyM

(14,975 posts)I do also like raspberries. Those chips are strong enough to give me the Chocolate "hit" while enjoying the raspberry, as well. 👍

Is Talenti's a regional brand? I haven't heard of is but when I get ice cream I'm normally not adventuresome and get what I know I'll like (Hagen Dax, Ben & Jerry's)....
electric_blue68
(14,975 posts)It also looks like you can order it from Amazon.
I'd seen it at one of my former neighborhood's supermarkets for about 5 years or so but never a flavor that Interested me.
Then I had to move, one of my interim places last summer - the big supermarket further away had the Double Dark Chocolate Chip, and the black raspberry w Choc chips I mentioned.
So it was the first time they had somethings I wanted.👍
My close by supermarket (now that I'm settled) doesn't have it.
But I just saw on their site you can put in a flavor and find out where you can get it in your or near by Zip codes. What a great 😄 idea!
Now I see they also have pops!
I see they have coffee gelato. I'd get that and the double dark chocolate if I find them together. A scoop of each in a bowl. What fun! 🥰😄

(34,499 posts)brand called Hudsonville, my favorites being Traverse City Cherry Fudge and Double Chocolate Almond (so good) but for national brands, it's a tossup between Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia and Chocolate Fudge Brownie. I also love Haagen Dazs Mango Sorbet if I'm in the mood for lighter fare.
I hope you feel better soon!

(22,282 posts)It is good, but we like Braum's better.
Regional brand, from a large family dairy in Oklahoma. They operate small markets with fresh & frozen food, many varieties of ice cream and sherbet, ice cream and pretty good burgers, breakfasts etc.
They sell their own milk products; we buy our milk at Braum's.

(20,228 posts)It was so awful, and they handled it so badly, I just lost my taste for it. Now I like HEB's Creamy Creations and Kroger's Private Selection and their regular store brand.
yellowdogintexas
(22,282 posts)At present, Fort Worth does not have an HEB. We keep hoping!
We do have a Central Market which is a subdivision of HEB; it's upscale and similar to Whole Paycheck but less expensive and not 100% organic. The best produce department in the county, and lots of HEB brands in the store. It is a Food Market with a few frills but you won't find lawnchairs, barbecues, coolers, school supplies and other non edibles. You can buy paper products and cookware though. My favorite part: the large bulk spice section where you can purchase smaller portions of the spices/seasonings you don't use as often. Big money saver.
This potential merger/buyout of Kroger & Albertson's may result in some store closings. Hopefully HEB can snag a few good locations as a result. I am not willing to drive 20 miles to the nearest HEB.

(17,346 posts)Every time I go to Trader Joes I find something new. My recent guilty pleasure is a 6 oz can of sparkling mango flavored wine. Comes for in a carton. Last 5 weeks dear husband has lots of health issues that required 5 days hospitalization (influenza +parainfluenza). Home 2 weeks then back for 10 days (pneumonia and UTI). He has short term memory issues so I stay with him around the clock, though about 6 days into the 10 day stay I was able to hire care givers thru the night that helped me get better sleep even though staff comes in e eryn4 hours 🙂. Anyway, since weve been home I really enjoy one in the evening as Im winding down.
Sprite and soda crackers are essential but man oh man, when you finally are able to eat something else and keep it down!
electric_blue68
(14,975 posts)My T Joes are far enough away I don't get their ice cream bc to make a trip shorter I have to use the subway vs just using buses. Subway cars stay hotter than buses in cool weather. Not that I have trouble riding the subway (well, yeah, only bc lingering Covid).
However it dawned on me that if I get a small insulated bag, and buy their ice cream in the cooler weather maybe it would arrive home ok. A later Oct experiment. 👍

(4,646 posts)It was discontinued in pints but you can (supposedly) get it by the scoop at the cone shops. It was the best damn ice cream Ive ever had. Since its unavailable, I go for Cherry Garcia and dream of someday enjoying my beloved Brownie Batter again.
Edit to Add:
Years ago, Hagen Daas made a Baileys ice cream that was super tasty. My best friend and I bought every pint they had at our Food Lion when we realized it was a limited release.

(12,480 posts)I use lactose free milk and sweeten it with stevia. (22,282 posts)His specialty is Brandied Peach (or Apricot) if making it for adults.
He cuts up the dried fruit and soaks it in Brandy until all the liquid is absorbed, then spreads the bits out on a cookie sheet and freezes them. When the ice cream is almost hardened enough, he folds the fruit into the rich vanilla ice cream. It is Killer!
He makes a very rich vanilla using a 5 1/2 quart (frozen contents) White Mountain hand cranked churn. Very old school.
When he makes it at family gatherings, he has a line of middle and high school age kids who want to help churn.
We were invited to a party at the home of some Pakistani friends, and he made ice cream. He took all the ingredients and churned it there. All those men wanted to help churn and everyone loved the ice cream.

(22,778 posts)Tillamook is from Portland, Oregon and I can get here in Michigan. all their flavors are incredible. A rich and creamy ice cream. Guernsey Farms is from Northville, MI. Not sure where else you can get it. And Jeni's is incredible. Real interesting flavors. And they're al great. But it's super expensive. Also, Ray's from Royal Oak, Mi is excellent. But I'm sure the distribution is limited.
I haven't heard of any of those brands. I sometimes have a "spoiled Californian" mindset and feel like we should be able to get EVERY BRAND of EVERYTHING here!!!! For God's sake, there are 40 Million of us!!!

(17,219 posts)Originally, Turkey Hill was a chain of convenience stores in Ohio and PA. Their C&C is the best mass-produced brand in the country. Food snobs, of course, will sneer at anything that isn't boutique, but for regular people, TH is the bomb. Mr Google says you can find it in Fred Meyers, Ralph's, QFC and Food 4 Less stores on the WC, and Walmart has it, too.
