I will be at the polls from 6 am to 9 pm roughly.

At least we have You Tube.

I love The Derby and I love the pageantry and traditions. Besides this is likely to be the only Coronation in my remaining lifetime. I think I was 5 when The Queen's coronation took place.

well, everything.

And it's very "London" for there to be a ton of people on the pavements, then to spill into the street and follow. One Remembrance Day when the late Queen appeared at the Cenotaph, hundreds of thousands were crammed into the area surrounding it.Just for a glimpse, and to participate in the two minutes of silence when suddenly that noisy, clattering crazy city of 9 million and that enormous crowd fell completely silent, and remained silent.

When one gets into the middle of these ceremonies, one understands WHY. It knits past and the present together, and one can feel the weight of hundreds of years of tradition, and the feeling that this time we live in is both precious and very small. Living in the US, which is trying to erase its own history as quickly as possible, it feels suddenly very important.

Ha, I enjoy that they started with the tune of Star of the County Down, a nice old folk song about love for Rosie McCann (a good recording is by Van Morrison with the Chieftains) , and followed with The Holy Ground, a wry song about missing the girls back home, especially from the red light district.! When the pope ( John Paul) visited Dublin in 1979 and approached the stage at the Phoenix Park with a crowd of one million, the band welcomed him with that song. Folks were turning towards one another with faces of shocked disbelief and laughs and smiles knowing the words of the song, and joining in the for the line “ fine girl you are”.
