Willie Nelson, but I think he should be in the Country Hall of Fame.--if there is such a thing. Also, what is the criteria for adding musical artists to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I am going to look up the criteria and if there is a yearly limit of musical artists added per year.

(25,471 posts)wondering. I know the Oscars have PR people that push for actors and actresses and movies. Does a board approve of the enlistees?

(11,081 posts)I think Rolling Stone has a heavy hand in who gets nominated, and Jann Wenner at least used to have veto power, I believe. This year, I believe Cyndi Lauper got the most fan votes, but wasn't inducted.

(5,438 posts)"rock and roll" is a severely eclectic style that can certainly describe many country artists, inc "waylon and willie and the boys."

(11,081 posts)And then get upset at non-rock musicians being inducted.
Rock music is a genre, but it is not the same as Rock and Roll.
Rock and Roll is a genre, but it is also an attitude/ethos.
Willie's music isn't rock, but his attitude is rock and roll. Ditto for Run-DMC.
As to who should be in that aren't...
King Crimson, Warren Zevon, Joy Division/New Order, The Monkees, Iron Maiden, MC5 are my big ones and there are probably another dozen at least that if I spent more than 5 minutes thinking about it would be inducted as well.

(65,213 posts)I agree with all you have listed there. All of them should be in. Plus, Blue Oyster Cult.

(25,471 posts)not being included year after year. Your link answer the question. and there is a variety of artists that some feel should be included and were not.
It's not exactly a purists' palace of fame.

(27,172 posts)It's a crime they are not in yet.
On edit: Bauhaus
They should have been in long ago.
Also, where in the hell are the Smiths?!?!?!?
Good god! This "Hall" is a joke!!
Devo?
Come on!!!!

(11,081 posts)The Smiths, Bauhaus, Echo, not so much.
Although it seems like 80s New Wave/Alternative is just starting to get recognized, so maybe in the next few years.

(27,172 posts)There is no logical scenario where Green Day is in the Hall of Fame when Social Distortion is not.
No effing way!!
AZSkiffyGeek
(11,081 posts)But Green Day has sold a helluva lot more albums than Social D., and I'm sure that figures in.
Honestly, I'm surprised Green Day got in as soon as they did considering Soundgarden isn't even in yet.

(9,184 posts)"Which artist, of any genre, will draw the most tourists, but isn't in yet?". That really chaps me because induction could have been really meaningful.
When everything is "Rock 'n Roll", nothing is.

(50,566 posts)James Charles Marshall: rock and roll just wouldn't be rock and roll without a row of Marshall Stacks at the back of the stage, now would it?
Georg Neumann: invented the condenser microphone, which is heavily used in recording studios, and the modern record cutting lathe. He also invented the rechargeable battery.
Roy and Gene Clair: founded Clair Brothers, one of the first touring sound contractors and probably the most successful.
Willi Studer: pioneer in multitrack tape recorders. Too many of your favorite records were created using Studer's machines.
...all right, and also Iron Maiden, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Spinal Tap.

(25,471 posts)speaking to fans of certain groups who are not in the RRHF yet. One being Heavy Metail not being included. I am surprised at ELP. In the film industry directors, sound productors, cinematographers, dress designers are also given awards. Which I think they should. This question was asked as poster not for my opinion but for those who had a question about why their group wasn't included. I feel like they have a right to question the RRHF.
