blew the hot air around the room. Windows open--did nothing. They did have window fans, but the nothing. In the summer we keep our house in the high 60's, 70 degrees at the most. What is your most comfortable room temp?

(18,252 posts)did u ever use a fan with a pot of water and ice in front of it? (erstatz swamp cooler) we also used thermal drapes .(before 3 pane windows .) kept the house cool . we also opened the windows at nite and closed them during the day. mom finaly broke down and bought a window mounted airconditoner.

(25,218 posts)remember we would put the fan on a chair, have the fan part backward to pull the hot air out of the room. Windows were open all the time. Finally, they bought one for the living room and everyone slept there. Sorry about your heart condition, Alla. The older I get the more the heat bothers me.

(8,333 posts)Put a fan in the upstairs window pointing out and vent the heat out and hopefully pull the cool air up. We had one window AC unit in the living room. It went on when it was really hot. Only when it was really hot. My parents would sleep on the couches and the kids on the floor.

(230 posts)I will be the one guy who bucks the trend and retires up north. It may just be to the highlands of NC/TN/VA or NE New Mexico, but I will find a place where the avg temp and humidity don't match up for 8 months out of the year. Why people flock to Florida will always be a mystery to me.

(32,005 posts)Someone agrees with me about Florida! Ive been there before about 6 different times, the heat and humidity would choke me to death. I could never live there year round.

(1,013 posts)I'm in North Carolina and we have a lot of humidity. I like the colder weather though when I can bundle up.
80 sounds kind of cold to me.
What about the winter? Do you keep the thermostat low? We keep it around 71 and I wear a scarf and hat when I'm cold.

(102,291 posts)and while I walk/hike in the wee hours or late PM, acclimation to A/C still takes away tolerance. Same for my doggy girl. I likewise can tolerate a power outage a lot better if I'm not dependent on a really cool house all the time.
I have many fans and will typically sleep with a little portable evaporative cooler. If it fails to cool down under an extended heat spell (90-100) for several days, I tend to sleep downstairs, which is at least a few degrees cooler. I do have a portable A/C unit in addition to central air, but I rarely use it.
I don't like really hot weather and while CO is semi-arid, when it surpasses 100F, that doesn't matter so much. I'd guess that where I spend the most time in the house ranges from 65F-88/92 in the early spring through late summer. Fortunately, I'm not that far from the foothills so overnight temps do moderate.
My home faces South so I get a lot of direct sun exposure--great for the winter time to melt the snow, but that means insulated curtains are a real necessity. I have vaulted ceilings so I can't address all the windows, but it does help. And I do NOT cook using the oven in the summertime. Cold meals, microwaved foods, or re-heated Instant Pot fare/wok stir-frying is it.
Old Farmer's Almanac vs Farmer's Almanac both call for a hotter-than-normal summer (ugh), but one says "steamy," and the other is drier than usual. Regardless, I would love 60 F throughout the spring/summer. One can dream.

(86,646 posts)I used to like it in the 60s but I now have arthritis in my spine so getting a chill really sucks. We don't have humidity here so I open windows in the summer until it gets over +85F then I use the AC and then I have it between +72F and +75F, my heat tolerance level, I can't handle heat, never could.
Now that we get triple digit temps in the far north, AC is now needed up here, ten years ago, nobody had it except hotels and businesses.
we can do it

(65,068 posts)Our heating system is circulating hot water, so we have no air ducts.
We thought about it, but didn't want the huge disruption of tearing out ceilings, cutting walls & floors.
So, we have 4 high efficiency 9,000BTU window units.
Our handyman comes in May to put them in, October to take them out. (Yeah, I can still do it, I'm just too lazy. )
There's no thermostat and the rooms get to where they get.
I'd guess the rooms with the units are 69 or 70 and the other rooms a few degrees warmer.

(20,196 posts)I have free nights with electric plan, so I could make it colder at night when I'm home, but just don't feel the need.

(32,005 posts)And Im always complaining its too hot in here in the summer. But the electric bill doesnt like more a/c.
I thought the older you got the colder you got but I seem to be the exception.
