Now that the G7 summit is done

I just realized I’ve stayed in the G7 hotel in Hiroshima. It was 2007 and my husband and I had decided at the last minute to take a bullet train to Hiroshima from Tokyo and stay overnight. We visited the memorials, looked at the phone-booth-like shelters protecting strings of paper cranes, visited the museum. Then we stayed overnight at the Grand Prince Hotel and took a boat to Miyajima the next morning to look at old temples, be assaulted by deer, and watch a complicated machine make fancy little cakes stuffed with red bean paste. It was a memorable trip. We had planned to take many more, but he died before we got to it.

I lived in Japan for 2 years, 9in the late 1970s, while in the Air Force nurse corp. I loved it.

Unmarried officers had to live on base, because only married officers were given housing allowance, and rent in Japan was extremely high. I went off base to explore every chance I had.
