Going on a road trip? The U.S. is #1 for route options

Maybe not so many of them are in great shape or have the most scenic views, but there's a clear-cut leader among the asphalt spreaders.

The second column below is kilometers of roads.

1 U.S. 3,097,278 14.34%

2 China 1,709,997 7.92%

3 India 1,052,718 4.87%

4 Mexico 741,949 3.43%

5 Argentina 703,087 3.25%

6 Brazil 681,267 3.15%

7 Russia 621,813 2.88%

8 Australia 620,393 2.87%

9 Germany 563,155 2.61%

10 France 523,566 2.42%

The first was a coast to coast including SF & LA with first stop in Flagstaff, meet up w a friend, rent a car; visit Navajo & Hopi Nations, get to motel next day Canyon de Chelle, later get to late afternoon, and sleep overnight in Monument Valley, off to California, make a friend on the bus, back Flagstaff; Greyline tour w new friend (they get off at the Hopi Nation), visit Grand Canyon, visit my dad's friend in Albequerque, head back to NYC.

Next year back to Flagstaff Navajo, Hopi Nations, up to South Dakota Black hills, and special event, visit cousin in Denver takes me on motorcycle to Red Rocks, Golden and Echo Lake (10,500 ft) by Mount Evans, Continental Divide in the distance, back to Flagstaff, then back to dad's friend in Albequeque and back to NYC.

Amazing to see the various cities, pass through smaller areas, watch the changing landscapes!

Primarily, you can just take in the view the entire time and not have to keep your eyes fixed mostly on the highway.

The drawbacks would be getting stuck with a seatmate or someone close by who talks incessantly or smells awful. But it sounds like your experience was positive.
