The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI just got great news about my job!
My client's little brother, 6 months old, also has some medical issues. He was FINALLY approved for home nursing care and I will be getting a $10.00 raise!
My first client, 2 years old, sleeps soundly through the night. Her little brother is getting better about sleeping, but has major heart surgery soon. Both children have feeding tubes and the older sister has a tracheostomy but is very stable, medically.
So, this is great news for his exhausted parents and for me and my family!!

(6,080 posts)I'm concerned about his surgery. It's pretty major and it's open heart so recovery will take a long time.
Even though his sister is medically stable and will probably have her trach discontinued this summer after some tests, she will probably need nursing care for a few years.
After being tube fed, she is now oral aversive and will need lots of therapy to start eating food. That's really normal for tube fed kids, unfortunately. My last client was 8 years old before he started nibbling on food. Her brother may have the same problem with eating by mouth. Every child is different.
Thanks!!

(6,080 posts)And the parents can finally get a breather. Dad is working 2 jobs and mom has a state job, but some health issues of her own. They need a break!

(29,704 posts)We have had a great day here too. I got my first paycheck for taking care of my beloved who has been so sick for the past year. It's incredible to get paid to live my life. It's such a blessing as we had been living on credit cards for a while now.

(6,080 posts)My wife is disabled, but at least she can mostly take care of herself. This way, I can get my credit back in order and get our house remodeled to accommodate her wheelchair.

(33,515 posts)...I want to applaud you for taking on this task.
The issues you describe are for more serious than what we faced - after some initial uncertainty we knew it would end up alright - but hanging out in Children's Hospitals I saw some of the worst things happening to other people, and I know too well how challenging this task must be in balancing the practical realities and the requirements for compassion.
I don't know you at all, but I thank you for being you.
May you enjoy the best of luck in this position.
