...one of the most beautiful exotic hardwood around (one of my favorites! I have a gorgeous chess set made from it.). And one of the hardest to work in! That fact alone makes that manta ray all the more impressive.

There doesn't even appear to be a single species of tree corresponding to ebony; same with "African blackwood" and "Grenadilla wood".

All are rarer and more expensive than other woods (and disappearing at an alarming rate), so more common woods are darkened ("ebonized" ) and used instead. And I believe there is at least one nut which is used.
