I haven't really slept since late June.
What do you want to know?
UPDATED AT 4:33 AM -Damn! That stuff works fast. I barely had time to get this post done, let alone ready the first response or two. It was lights out!
So, I got about 5 hours of sleep. Would have liked 7 or 8, but 5 is still better than 0 or 1 or 2.

(1,581 posts)Not being able to sleep is a curse I would not wish on anyone but the most rabid republican.
Maybe they already have this problem. Could explain why their thinking is so messed up.

(6,581 posts)I have a sleep specialist neurologist that I want to go see. I have other "medical stuff" in the next 2 weeks, so am going to get an Oct. appt. set up. The intervening medical treatment may go a long way to resolving the insomnia, but I also have severe sleep apnea currently not being treated. I gave up on the stupid CPAP machine after a few months, it was horrible, but its clear to me now I have no choice but to do it again.
Last sleep specialist was a pulmonologist that my PCP sent me to as the preferred one for their medical/hospital group. And I hated him, horrible bedside manner. That didn't help at all.
And frankly, it's a neurological problem, not a physiological problem at least in my case, no physical airway obstructions, so this new one is a neurologist.

(10,418 posts)The most basic, urgent question. What do you want out of life?
Denninmi
(6,581 posts)I'll answer on the other side. More appropriate there.
Systematic Chaos
(8,601 posts)I was having insomnia so bad it was just destroying me mentally and physically, more so than any of the other problems I had due to my weight. I started Ambien and took it for about 3 months. I was able to sleep like a baby, none of the weird things you hear about with other people happened to me, and when I stopped taking it the insomnia made no effort at all to return.
I also had luck with Xanax when I took it for a short time to help quell massive work-related anxiety. I mean full-blown panic attacks just looking at the employee entrance to the building from the parking garage.
Those are the only two medications of that nature I have ever tried, and I hope I'll never need anything else. I hope that your experience with the Ambien will be as smooth and beneficial as my own was. I've been reading some of your more recent posts, and I know you are going through a lot. I really hope things start improving for you!

(6,581 posts)I guess I'm ok with it.
I did only sleep about 5 hours with 10 mgs, I kind of hoped it would be more like 7-8. But maybe I have to work up to that, my brain chemistry is set on "no sleep" right now, it may take time to alter that to a more normal pattern. Obviously, the more sleep I get, the more the entire seratonin/melatonin thing can start to function again properly.

(6,154 posts)Diphenhydramine (Gravol). I take 2 pills or more very night to get to sleep and help my anxiety/depression. I've taken Xanax before for anxiety. I have an addictive personality and I love the feeling these meds give you, that delicious dreamy knocked out high feeling. They are dangerous for me I think.

(6,581 posts)But I just buy the store generic, much cheaper.
That usually puts me out like a light, too. I tried 2 last monday evening, and it worked similar to the ambien, about 6 hours. So, I tried again last tuesday evening, and nada. No sleep.
Hence my request to my doctor on friday for the ambien.

(11,769 posts)This regime enables me to get a solid 6-8 hrs sleep, free from my cat allergy runny nose/congestion and my menopausal insomnia.
If I take two, I will be up all night and my heart/mind racing.
