Today is my mother's 100th birthday

She's in a nursing home, can't get out of bed after Covid, but she's hanging in there. No underlying issues, only hyperthyroid and glaucoma. Asked why she's lived so long she would say, "broccoli."
Loves Rachel Maddow. I keep fresh flowers in her room. She has my deceased brother's seascape painting also. Beloved by us all, she's definitely our matriarch.

What a blessing, for her and for you.

My dad was born 11/5/1919, so 4 years before your mom.
He died in 1999, just before he would have turned 80.

When our parents were born life expectancy was lower. My dad never expected to reach 80, or to see the year 2000. That was probably true for your mom too, and yet she's reached 100 years today! Truly remarkable.

Mine made it to her late 90s, but sadly had a lot of health problems the last couple of decades of her life. She was still saying almost to the end, though, that she was going to live to 100.

Happy Birthday to your Mom! We celebrated my Mom’s 100th birthday in April. She wore a rose gold tiara and a sash that said ‘100 and Fabulous’. It was a grand celebration.

25. I was a floor nurse in a couple of nursing homes.

I know people say how awful the staff are, but I have to be truthful and say that my staff were some of the kindest people I ever knew. Except for a few exceptions, they were sweet and loving to all of the patients, very often. bringing them birthday presents and holiday presents, when some had no family left or no family who really cared about them, and spending their own money for new clothing or haircuts or little special things for their patients. I hear all of these horrible horrible things. but I have to admit that there are a lot of very kind people who work in these places and they work very damned hard.
