Besides the connection to the 9/11 date, there are two things that are interesting about the date the Dude writes on the check:
1) The day he writes it on is probably not the 11th (the Dude's landlord later tells him "tomorrow's already the 10th"
.
2) It may not even be 1991. George Bush's "this will not stand" quote on the TV is from August 6, 1990.
I think these errors are intentional by the Coen Brothers...they show that the Dude is so laid-back and limber he doesn't even know what day or year it is.
